doctors note to get out of a gym contract

Don’t drag a doctor or medical professional into your lie

They will almost certainly still keep charging you. It’s a contract. Maybe you should just go.

I must have been sick the day in law school where they talked about doctor's notes voiding a valid contract. Hmmm.

I think it’s rude user behavior to ask a doctor to get you out of what is essentially your financial mistake.

Tbh I think you should talk to the gym about your concerns. Maybe they would be willing to let you out of the contract to avoid you injuring yourself. Realistically, they should be able to help you modify your workout until you’re ready for the full version.

Either way, a medical excuse is usually time-limited to recovery period and specific about why. Yours is time-limited to “the length of your contract” and the reason is “because this is too hard for me.” Not particularly difficult to see you’re just trying to get out of paying.

No way. The entire reason gyms are so successful is they prey on people like OP who go in on Jan 1, sign up for 18 month contracts, go 3x, then never show up again. If they refunded everyone who figured out they actually can’t hack regular visits to the gym they would never make money.

OP here. Ha! This is what I was asking, really. I’m not a lawyer and not married to one either.

Thanks, everyone.

I’ll set up a meeting with the trainer at the gym and voice my concerns.

I’ll have to get a note to pause the membership anyway, as I am expecting to have surgery in the next month or so to remove some endometriosis. I can’t work out during that healing time anyway, so it’ll have to be paused anyway. From there, I’ll see if there are ANY loopholes that can get me out of this in general.

And PP, you’re right. This is what gyms do. I was stupid to sign an 18 month contract.

Most places only give you a 1-2 month medical pause, not an actual cancellation.
Anonymous
Have you tried to get out of it yet? Tell them you’re having pain issues and that you need to cancel.

I hope they enforce the contract OP. I can’t stand people like you who don’t think things through and don’t think rules apply to you.

Sometimes you can get out of it by telling them you are moving out of the area or something. (I know it’s a lie not particularly ethical, etc but for some reason it wouldn’t really bother me to this)

They might ask you for some documentation, etc.

I’m sorry, I didn’t think it through, and I also wasn’t expecting this much pain.

Not an option. I’m not in DC. Small town.

And the medical reasons aren’t a lie. I shouldn’t have made it sound like it was one.

I have endometriosis and am likely scheduling surgery.

Make sure to actually read the contract - it might turn out you have recourse for other reasosns
