Shutdown Rhetoric

I vote to pass the spending bill in the Senate requires 60 votes. The Republicans only have 52 seats. It isn't a majority vote (for the budget) in the Senate like it is in the House. So technically, if all the Republicans in the Senate vote in favor of funding the government and none of the Democrats do, then yes indeed it is the Democrats responsible for the shutdown.

"A vote.....", not "I vote.....". Typo.

McConnell should change the senate rules to require just a simple majority and then pass the increased defense spending bill.

Hillary and Trump were both hawks.

Duh.

Americans are paying attention right now. They want a permanent DACA resolution, they want CHIP funded for at least 6 if not 10 years (saves $6B over ten years to fund it now) and they want the nonsense to stop. The GOP are fully in control and could do all of this yesterday, but they aren't.

No way the dems get blamed for this.

If the Democrats want to hold the budget hostage because they want a DACA deal then shame on them. Deal with DACA separately. Shame an any party that continues to tack different agendas together as a way to fight the other side. The spending bill doesn't, and shouldn't, have anything to do with DACA.

Nobody wants that, and I'm not sure they can use the "nuclear option" for this. Even if that was an option, that doesn't mean they should use it and it doesn't mean they are responsible if the don't use it. It doesn't need to be used and shouldn't be. Our politicians need to learn to work together and get things accomplished. All parties.

And you know what? For 230 years, we have managed to find reasonable compromise in the Senate. Why should 2018 be any different?

Do you know why DACA is an issue today? Because the GOP was never once willing to put it to the floor for a vote, so no.

The super-majority requirement is just an internal senate rule that has been observed traditionally. It was an attempt to try and achieve some level of consensus but that sort of bipartisanship is long gone. So just do away with the pretense.

It really is ridiculous that we have these sort of shut-downs that have nothing to do with any spending differences or opinion.

Turnabout is fair play, right?

Republicans stole a Supreme Court seat from Obama. That is shameful. Why should Democrats play nice?

Exactly. Seems to me the GOP needs to learn COMPROMISE.

Exactly. The GOP as a whole hasn't acted in good faith on this issue at any point along the way. Dems would be fools to believe that if they pass this resolution the GOP will start negotiating sincerely on DACA.

After all, Susan Collins is still waiting on Obamacare stabilization, and the GOP isn't even pretending to keep their word on that one.

Mitch thinks the Democrats are at fault if they don't do everything he wants and ask for nothing.

Um you guys are idiots. The problem is not the Senate. I don't think democrats will kill if it goes to the senate. The problem is the freedom caucus means the republicans NEED democrat votes in the house. Votes they probably won't get. Republicans fully wear this if they gov shuts down because they won't be able to get it through their own party on a party line vote in the house.

There is a viable proposal for dealing with DACA but it needs funding for the wall/enhanced border security, limiting chain migration, and cutting back on the number of new immigrants by limiting to a merit based system without regard to country of origin. If these are part of the legislation the DACA kids can be given right of residence and a pathway to citizenship.

If you are referring to the Graham-Durbin compromise proposal, Trump has already nixed that. 100% of Americans would have supported that proposal., well, everyone but trump and I guess Stephen Miller.
