Using Rick as nickname for Frederick?

I know an Erik who goes by Rick. I assume it's because "rick" is the second syllable of Erik.

Sure, telling the Preschool teacher to call him Rick is fine, and he'd probably have that name all throughout his life, but when someone sees your name first before being introduced to you, they would call you Fred, not Rick. Easy enough to say, call me Rick instead, but most people who don't know you would call you Fred, not Rick upon first meeting. That was my point.

If you were introduced to somebody named Frederick, you would say, "Hi, Fred"? If so, why would you do this? Do you also say, "Hi, Bob" to people named Robert, and "Hi, Mike" to people named Michael, even though you have no idea whether they actually go by "Bob" or "Mike"?

PP here. I meant because Eric/Erik is such a short name anyway, as opposed to, say, Frederick. Plus, just personally, I like the name Eric/Erik better.

Came across this… As a Frederick, I went by Ricky as a child, Rick through my teens, then by college and professional life, I got tired of stating that preference and go by Frederick… So immediate family and old friends call me Rick and everyone else calls me Frederick… I do tend to correct people who assume Fred as the shortened version…

We know a Friedrich that goes by Rick, he says the American pronunciation of Rick is closest to his real name and so prefers it.
