I am just waiting for this thread to turn into the usual catholic bashing that happens anytime someone brings up anything catholic on this site... Anytime now!! |
No, it is real. They may have changed the names, but other than that, it's true to life. |
If your blind blief in a work of fiction as a "documentary" wasn't so scary, it would be funny. |
People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones |
What documentary are you talking about? |
I am a Catholic, and betting the church remains as conservative as ever. This changes nothing. |
Poster is calling the Da Vinci Code (movie version) which is based upon Dan Brown's novel (fiction) a documentary. I quick google search shows the historical and biblical inaccuracies of his tale. |
I thought that was already public knowledge? Anyway, don't care why the old creep is leaving. I just hope that his replacement is someone who spends more time thinking about the social good the church can do, and less time about all the ways "the bible" can oppress people and limit their choices. |
Of course, let us move the Church away from it biblical mission and have it become a social service organization. |
I hope the next guy looks less like an evil character from central casting, and has a less stereotypically evil-sounding name than "Ratzinger." I mean really, if you're going to put a demon in the papacy, at least do it with some panache. |
Yes! That would be ideal. The bible (the new testament, anyway) is about love and acceptance and a community of generosity. Yet so many of its proponents of all denominations just see it as a list of all the people to whom they are superior, and use it to justify some truly unjustifiable behavior. If the church really wants to stay relevant, it needs to stop disgusting such large swaths of humanity. |
Well, one could argue that "social service" is the biblical mission of the church. From the gospels: Luke 5:31, 32 And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." I think the kind of Catholic or the kind of Christian you are depends upon how you interpret words such as these. I, and the clergy I respect, interpret these words to mean that they should minister with love to all who come through the doors of their church, and that it is not their place to pass judgment but to proclaim the gospel and to allow it to work in the hearts of each person in their own way. What purpose is served by turning away sinners with judgment? This was not Jesus' way; nor should it be the way of our church. And we would do well to remind ourselves that we are ALL sinners. |
Wouldn't you expect him to wait until after Easter? |
Mea Maxima Culpa is an actual documentary which may be influencing this: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2111478/ |
