So true. We're actually planning on this (of course the kids don't know that).

Why? I fully expect my daughter to adapt and find a way to be self-sufficient. I see people my age finding new jobs, with and without degrees. I'm 29. Many of us them have jobs working from home or sending them internationally for work. We're all from working and middle class backgrounds, so no family hookups.

My goal for my preschooler is to be trilingual by HS graduation. We're moving abroad for a few years with my work so the opportunity is there.

Yes, I had lofty aspirations when I was 29 too. But 20 years later and reality has amended the goals.

My thoughts: with some form of sequestration coming (there will be something) a contraction in defense contractors is coming-- which I assume your what DH will be going for because you don't have nearly enough for retirement. 50k total for vA schools is pretty good if they go VA and if/when sequestration coming I see VA school becoming more popular so I wouldn't bet on it and with 800k in retirement i am surprised you dont have more in college savings. Just continue on. I am sure all those retirees with a house worth 800k and IRA worth 800k in 2008 wish you the best. Those are the one who are toast right now.

800k in retirement in your 40s is not bad when you also have a paid off 800k house AND a 50k/year pension starting in your 50s. and a dual income household. not bad at all.

If you do want a second opinion (that is more reputable than some stranger on DCUM!) pay for a quick assessment from either USAA for a fee-only financial planner:
