Normal or Broken? My Oven Takes 20 Minutes to Preheat

Anonymous
My GE profile gas oven(regular, not wall) takes about 5-7 min to get to 350. 20 minutes seems very long.

My Dacor Epicurious convection oven takes 20+ minutes to get to the desired temperature. If I put anything in prior to it hitting the desired temp, it gets burned on the top. It also runs about 25F high, so I have to adjust the temp. every time I bake something. VERY frustrating oven. It's fairly new but past the warranty so I'm stuck with it.

Change the heating element (around $25-$50 for the part) before replacing. Simple fix if youre handy.

I have a 13 year old GE Profile Gas oven and we fixed it once as it just quit working all together. Plus a couple burners went out. Now we have been living with the 20 minute wait to pre-heat for a couple years.
I know we are rather layed back about it all. However this year I want to be sure to be able to cook a super great Turkey Dinner for my 96 year old Dad. So we just threw in the towel and surrendered. Went to Sears to get a Samsung with True Convection Cooking and 5 burners one of which simmers. The sliding rack is great and it is 5.8 big with 3 racks if I need it. Great Settings and just seems like it is worth the money at $1300 with 2 years deferred billing. I have made about 80 turkeys in my life and this one needs to be evenly baked. I was also concerned about a gas leak which could be dangerous with my old one.

Eeek. I need to time mine. Mine takes forever.

My GE Monogram induction range is new and takes that long. It takes about 15 minutes to get to 350. The Breville toaster oven takes less than 5 minutes. (It's much smaller, obviously, but the difference is startling.)

Maybe GEs are just that slow? I've always thought it took forever but since it was like that out of the box, I figured that's the way it was.

I have brand new Sears Kenmore electric range and it took 25 minutes to preheat oven to 400. My old one took 10 minutes. I don't understand that.

I have an OLD oven, 15+ years and it takes maybe 10 mins to preheat, maybe even faster. I think there is something wrong with yours.

How on earth do old threads like this get found and bumped?

+1. Ours is a 36" and I figure that is part of the problem - that is a lot of volume to heat.

You might want to try using a stand alone oven thermometer to see how fast it does heat. It could be that the thermostat or the temperature sender is wonky and it really has heated up more quickly than shows on the integrated thermometer.

Same. At least 15 minutes.

High end is different. They have multiple temp sensors so you don't have significant hot/cold spots.

We did start shopping for new ovens, and I agree there are so many new features. If we get a new one, I would want a double oven with convection (with the mini oven on top, larger on the bottom) and 5 burners. Unfortunately, we only have space for a 30 inch. This is not that cheap. We're looking between $1800 and $2500. I know that's cheaper than the $5k-$8k vikings, etc., but it's more expensive than the basic $850 Maytag.

During the 8 years you would previously have noticed such a long time to preheat. I just started both my electric GE ovens and am timing the preheat to 350. One is in a range [new] and the other is an older wall oven. The new range is slide in 30 with 5 on top [warmi ng].

Each one is about 1 degree per second. So with no food in it's 4-5 minutes. The digital read starts at 100. The older one gets slower when I go above 350. The new one has 3 racks and is great for baking. These are base GE models.
