I'm a pretty hard core Democrat, and yet I have to agree with this. If the McCain of 2000 paired with Christie Todd Whitman, I may well would have voted for them. I have a lot of respect for the man McCain used to be (and saw glimmers of it last night in between the absurdity) and I admire Christie Todd, as well, especially for her early break with the Bush administration while at EPA.

It's so sad to see a good man like McCain choose to be a lesser version of himself.

As for Rudy, I thought he was the vicious bastard he's always been. I shudder to imagine him in the White House . . . or as Attorney General . . . or in any other role in the Federal government. What a hateful, awful man.

I think Mitt and Rudy were an inspired ploy to remind us how we had lucked out in getting McCain rather than one of them. My plan B is to hope that if Obama loses, then I pray four times a day for (a) the old McCain to be reborn and (b) for him to make it through the four years. Oh, and Ginsberg, Stevens, Breyer, Souter, and Kennedy also.

Too funny!! And I whole heartedly agree!

I agree with this post about McCain. Its a pity he did not stand up to the party and choose a more moderate republican as a running mate. I probably still would not have crossed party line to vote for him, but I would have been happy to have him as POTUS.

Also, i not not worried about the republican attack dogs who are jockeying for cabinet positions. McCain is doing what he needs to do to win, but if he wins in November and survives his first term, I have two predictions:

1. Palin will be kept on a very, very short leash
2. The likes of Guliani, Romney and Huckabee will not see the inside of the White House (unless they are there for a visit).

I think that McCain truly is a Maverick at heart, it just disappointing that he had to compromise it in order to become POTUS.

Actually, hardly at all.

Agreed. I've been dealing with my fears about McCain winning the election with the thought that at least Bush will be gone -- which will be a big improvement. I would continue to feel that way if he had chosen a moderate v.p. But now that he has picked Palin, I'm a lot more fearful about him winning and possibly dying in office.

McCain was able to stand up to the North Vietnamese but he doesn't seem able to stand up to the right wing of the Republican Party. What happened to him?

Rudy is an arrogant, self-serving, mean-sprited jerk. Don't take it from me -- his own kids think so. I thought his speech at the convention was appalling -- mocking Obama's early community work while he makes millions "consulting" in Manhattan. And the security-fear mongering stuff which is Rudy's stock and trade.

I liked what Talkingpointsmemo.com's Marshall said: "I prefered his speech in the original german."

Yeah, he was leaving that for McCain, so he could use it to praise Bush.

Gag.

Rudy is a morally bankrupt, cheating, arrogant prick. But I still thought he did a decent job in NY. His speech made my stomach turn. What a pandering a-hole.

Actually, the plan is to appoint Huckabee as his ambassador to Observatory Circle.

Obama also never oversaw a police department known for physically abusing and shooting innocent "suspects." (Giuliani called one of these victims "not an altar boy" until it came out that, yes, in fact, he had been an altar boy.) No one seems to remember what New Yorkers thought of Giuliani before 9/11. He was super unpopular.

Service to country is his highest priority. Above preserving his soul.

I'm sorry John; that was snarky. You admitted that you broke once in Hanoi, so now it's twice.
