As for the language, well... her spanish is coming along!

Cooke is DCPS. This middle is for students who hve attended one of 4 charters.

But any empty seats would probably be filled via the usual lottery process.

It seems like they would have to use a lottery for open seats. However, both Yu Ying and Stokes have always prioritized their waitlists by application date. The names at the top of the waitlist get in.

Then will anyone get in regardless of language?

after the sorting-out years, how could there possibly be seats remaining after all of the preferred language schools kids get a shot at getting in?

I think there would be every incentive to accept as many students as possible. Greater economies of scale means more specialized classes.

Plus YY doesn't admit new students after the 3rd(?) grade, meaning that its upper classes are smaller than lower ones (since kids who left can't be replaced).

last entrance year for YY is 2nd grade

last entrance year for LAMB is PreK-4

Stokes fills openings as they occur thru 6th

Not sure if MV has set a policy yet

YY & LAMB's policies alone virtually ensure open seats.

As was mentioned on another thread, there are two new immersion programs applying for charters. One is Hebrew, the other is Arabic. Wouldn't those be interesting partners in the mix?

It would be great for the city-- a school that focuses on languages and cultures.

There are other EXISTING bilingual programs though: DC Bilingual and Mary Macleod Bethune come to mind. Interesting that they weren't asked to join in the mix?

How do you know if they weren't?

I can guarantee they were not invited to the party. YY, who is spearheading this effort and I'm sure they are only courting the "good" bilingual schools. (High test scores, well-structured, etc.)

Mary Macleod Bethune: 100% low income
DC Bilingual: 84.7% low income
Stokes is also heavily loaded with low income families, but still does well. I don't know about Mundo Verde because they are still new.

Or by "good" do you mean "not too many kids on a Free or Reduced Price Lunch"?

Bethune already goes thru 8th grade and is only immersion thru 2nd grade-- not the same model as Stokes, LAMB, etc. I agree that DC Bilingual should be in the group as they only go up to 5th grade and is an bilingual immersion school.

Read the original post from the Stokes principal. Her point is that Stokes is probably will not be part of this because their asinine board hasn't approved moving forward with a Charter school. I don't get why Stokes parents are not rioting in the halls. So glad I left that school for Deal.
