Chicago baby!!! 90 min RT flight on all major airlines direct, it's possible to find a reasonable ticket depending on time frame and no shortage of fun and food there. Obviously that's my hometown but it's all true. You will NEVER go wrong esp in summer in Chicago. Does not matter what age you are - the food is fab and Air and Water show usually in Aug. The museums are the best, you got a beach with a lake with waves, you can even take day trips if you really wanted. It is the best city in the world esp in summer.

Short of that - I'd look at Montreal/QC.

I’m bringing the kids to Chicago. Museums, shopping, pizza, Cubs. Sadly haven’t found a lot good shows to add to the list.

City? Beach? Mountains? Ages? Active?

Why are people so bad at original posts on rvum?

YAY! I'm the hometown Chicago PP.

2nd City in Old Town offers shows if you want to look at that or Chicago Theater. In Aug is the Air and Water Show on N Ave Beach. Depending on ages of your kids, Planetarium is really a highlight on the museum circuit that all locals will tell you although Field and Art Institute are also amazing. It's been awhile since I've been but you want to hit the neighborhoods of Chicago esp during summer as we have a festival every other weekend in different ones. Do not miss the Chicago Architecture Tour on the water. That is the one to do in Chicago - it's like going to Venice in Italy - it's like a must do

There is a very old bakery called The Lutz - been there for a zillion years. Pastries and meals there and pancakes at either Ann Sather's multiple locations or Wishbone - S cooking. Both been around forever as well. Gibsons on Rush used to be the best steak joint but there are a zillion steak joints in Chicago that give new meaning to Steakhouse.

Hotel Lincoln is a primo location where I stay, I used to live next to it - you can't beat the proximity to neighborhoods/Loop/D'town and being right by N Ave beach/Lincoln Park.

If two trips:

1) a city break somewhere. Chicago? San Francisco?

2) Drive up to Mohonk Mountain House in New York for 3-4 days.

Then you haven't looked. Chicago is an amazing theater town. And home to Second City.

Baha Mar in the Bahamas

Fairmont El San Juan

Charleston, SC. Boutique hotel in the city or head 30 mins to The Sanctuary at Kiawah.

I came here to say this. We had a great three days at the Sanctuary at Kiawah, and then toured around Charleston before a late flight out.

I would fly to Bermuda direct. Or Bar Harbor.

I second Cancun. You can fly direct from Dulles or BWI, many of the all inclusives nowadays have good food. Take an early morning flight and you have that whole day at the resort. They will hold you bags and let you hang at beach and pool all day. We just did this for 4 days of spring break and it was perfect. Left BWI at 730am, and we were on the beach at our resort at noon. Took a 5pm flight home on day 4 and got a late checkout and didn't leave the resort pool until 130pm.
