I hope no one is spending $2000 on clothes to be a guest at a baby shower!

Do you have a nice sundress, OP? Or a pair of pants and a pretty top? A skirt and a top? A daytime jumpsuit? Wear one of those!

These are clothes that will last you ten years (maybe not the J Crew pieces); they are quality over fast fashion quantity. That's a debate for another day though. Spending a lot of money on a quality piece (or pieces) is good for the environment and good for humans (usually indicates not made in a sweatshop but by people who are paid fair wages and treated well). Thinking about buying one dress or skirt of very high quality instead of 10 cheaper ones is a choice. And it's not crazy or insane to think of it as an investment and a way of life.

Heh that's a false dichotomy. I didn't suggest OP buy ten dresses. I suggested she wear a dress she owns.

No, but the jump to criticize without offering what the OP asked for - she wanted outfit recommendations (assuming she has nothing in her closet and is smart enough to have already looked). So your post was unhelpful. Post some links -- actually answer the request!

My post was helpful insofar as OP might start thinking she needs to take out a loan to buy a dress!

We don't know her budget or what she likes, so here are a few options:

jumpsuit: https://www.belkazan.com/products/lena-jumpsuit-1?variant=40487046905939¤cy=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&gad_source=4&gclid=Cj0KCQjwlZixBhCoARIsAIC745Bw4tCYOy9flreNbHoYge6d9OrCux8crcR50AdgwIQ5H_tGWbTxouwaAuuVEALw_wcB

And bring a cardigan or jacket if you're cold

Midi dress - again, bring a jacket: https://shopcurrentair.com/products/crinkled-ruched-round-neck-3-4-length-dress-w-short-slv-elastic-detail-3?currency=USD&variant=46768815866154&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Google%20Shopping&stkn=54b5665e2db9&utm_source=google&utm_medium=pmax&utm_campaign=20120400363&utm_content=&utm_term=&gadid=&gad_source=4&gclid=Cj0KCQjwlZixBhCoARIsAIC745Bqzk_gpxE1WkXPArfB1j1LnET-F0iTOPY3rwELpqNi0yQNOuqx_bwaAiQiEALw_wcB

A silk midi-dress on TRR: https://www.therealreal.com/products/women/clothing/dresses/no-6-printed-midi-length-dress-kweid

I love looking at clothes online so I could go for days - just give me some parameters

OP is 45 not 65.

I get the critique of PP's suggestions with the 2k outfit links, but you could easily shift the idea of those classic pieces to less expensive links from loft, sam edelman, etc. OP said she's not a fashion person and needs links and suggestions for everything so the posts that are like "Don't you have a sundress?" aren't exactly helpful, either.

This is the OP-I appreciate the recommendations. I work from home and while I have a few sundresses and some nice pants/tops I could wear I feel like a lot of my clothes are maybe a little out of date at this point. I was thinking of spending a couple of hundred dollars maximum. But even the links to the more expensive items are helpful because they provide ideas.

Dcum has a few posters that just respond to everything:
1) someone who is outraged that people spend more on clothes than her
2) the lady who suggests that awful Anthropologie dress for literally everything
3) the norma Kamali lady

But it's all ugly and boring looking. Do you not like colors?
