how many hours sleep does your child in MS get on school days?

that's insane. you need to dial back the practices. super unhealthy and unsustainable. we don't allow our kids to participate in any practices that end later than 8pm. their health and growth potential is far more important than them attending a late practice in a sport. parents really need to get their priorities straight!

Well if I did that then the kid wouldn't play the sport they love. They don't complain about it, and I have a hard time stayed awake until they get home or picking them up that late, but this particular kid has never needed much sleep. Doesn't sleep in on weekends or days off when they are able to, never even napped until they were almost 1. Just doesn't need a lot of sleep. Up before me without an alarm at 6:45 this morning.

private school? public middle schools around here all start at 7:30am.

Public. The bus comes at 7:40 and the stop is a few houses away. Her bus is often late for the start of school fwiw.

biggest cop-out response ever. grow up and parent your kid. do not allow a dumbass coach who has 13 year olds at practice until 10pm dictate your life. coaches like that should be fired and banned from coaching. but you're responsible for allowing your kid to participate.

Ummm the families with the 9 p.m. bedtime are not the insane ones....

Not enough IMO. He goes to bed at 9-10 and is up at 6. Unfortunately, our middle school starts ridiculously early. One more year…

My 8th grader goes to bed about 9:45pm and gets up at 6:15am (leaves for the bus stop at 6:45am). He has a baseball game every Wednesday, but the time changes weekly so some Wed games don’t impact his bedtime and on occasion, some do last until 10 or later. Thankfully, those are rare.

Why are kids up at 6/6:30? When do they leave for school?

Mine is up at a soft 7 for breakfast and out the door 7:30.

Mine wakes up at 615am because they take a HS class every morning.

My 6th grader (school starts at 7:30) goes up to bed between 9-10 pm and is up at 6:30. She’s 12, I can’t force her eyes shut, but the electronics brick by 9 pm, so when she goes up she generally is asleep fairly quickly. She swims and has a couple early morning practices a week, so those afternoons she gets home around 2:40, takes a nap and usually goes up to bed early.

I have seen texts come in after 10pm so I see that she's correct about at least some of them. I don't get why since they have to be up by 6:30am latest to get to MS on time. Are parents just not prioritizing sleep?

8th grader at public school:
8-9 hrs/night

Well, our middle schools here in Fairfax County start at 7:30am and my kid’s bus comes at 6:50am with an 8 min walk to the bus stop, so…yeah, a 6:15am wake up for him.

This. Honestly, the idea of a "bedtime" for a teenager is odd to me. Mine has to get up a bit before 6am and gets to sleep when he can after activities and homework and, yes, sometimes just wasting time if he has caught up on sleep over the weekend.

DD13 doesn't leave for school until 7:40 but likes to wake up early, make her breakfast, watch some Gilmore Girls or whatever, scroll Tiktok, do her skincare and hairstyle, get dressed (outfit already curated and selected), make her bed, go over her notes if she has a test, pack her bag- making sure she has everything for her EC. She just really likes waking up early. If she overslept and woke up at 7:15, she'd probably cry and say she doesn't have enough time to get ready. (She does.) Luckily that hasn't happened.

It is. I tell my 14 yo good night when I go to bed and then assume he goes to sleep at some point. If not, oh well, he’ll be tired the next day. He’s usually asleep between 9:30 and 10 from what he tells me but he really doesn’t have a “bedtime”.
