"Strict" Vegetarian

All the others do avoid animal products, incl those. They generally tend to pick vegan dishes when eating out as it's less likely to be "contaminated" with chicken stock or whatever.

Which tomato sauces have meat in it? Generally marinara is vegan.

Many Italian restaurants use chicken stock in their tomato sauce.

Ive never heard of this! I dont doubt it, of course. But any time I get italian food the marinara is marked as vegetarian. I'd be pretty upset if they were putting chicken stock in!

I’m pescatarian so not a vegetarian (so I don’t avoid fish sauce or worchestshire or Caesar) but do avoid chicken stock and gelatin. Another thing I avoid is refried beans made w lard (I only eat vegetarian refried beans). I know avoiding lard seems obvious but my in laws recently made refried beans assuming I’d eat it and were surprised when I asked if they were vegetarian beans so not something everyone necessarily considers.

Anchovies

I am vegan, but I will eat honey. I usually ask if things are vegetarian in restaurants, since it’s understandable. I can often tell if the menu item contains egg or cheese (maybe not butter, though). I really prefer restaurants that list these items in their menus, but it’s a lot of work. I generally assume all soups are not veg unless otherwise told. I steer myself toward cuisines that favor vegetarians: southern Indian, certain Ethiopian restaurants, etc.

Oh also boxed cake mixes often have lard in them in case you didn’t know.

Yeah Ive never heard that either... All betty crocker box cake mixes are actually vegan. They tell you to add eggs and milk (which vegans can sub/adjust for), but the ingredients in the box do not contain animal products.

Correcting myself, because not all are vegan, like the angelfood mix has egg whites. But most are, and I'd be shocked if any of the mainstream boxes had lard.

The WORST is menus who mark things as vegetarian but it seems to be incomplete. For example, California Pizza Kitchen. Why is every section marked except the pastas? Is the Buffalo Cauliflower vegetarian? The corn? The tomato soup? Then you ask them and they say "yeah it's vegetarian" but you can't trust them...

I had to stop eating spinach artichoke dip because it is sometimes made with chicken stock, that was a sad day.

I avoid all of what you mention - I don’t eat Caesar unless I check the ingredients and no anchovy in the dressing, avoid soups at restaurants, etc. I just dont like the taste of meat so having chicken broth in something makes it taste gamey to me.

I ask about soups and refried beans. Never thought to question marinara sauce, but I rarely eat that at restaurants. Cornbread can have lard, so I avoid that too. Honestly though I rarely eat out. I’m sure I’ve inadvertently eaten chicken broth or something like it, I lived in New Mexico for a long time before learning it was a common ingredient in green chile.

Yes I forgot about gelatin! No skittles, no starbursts, no jello (unless it's a jello shot).

This to me means vegan.
Vegetarian is no meat/animal flesh. No animal dies to provide the food itself.
Vegetarians eat eggs, dairy.

That is super frustrating! I just looked at the menu and at first blush, it appears they are listing it for vegan items (excluding items like cream for the tomato soup, or gorgonzola for the buffalo cauli). But the pizzas all have cheese AND have the leaf. Perhaps they mean it can be made vegan if you exclude the cheese? I'm honestly not sure. Confusing indeed!!

Where do you think gelatin comes from?
