Is 80k a decent salary for a degree holder in his 30s?

Anonymous
Yes, if you're in Kentucky, Ohio or North Dakota or somewhere like that.

We were both happy about our income increase, but hearing about all these people talking about six digit incomes makes me feel self-conscious, like we're failures. We're both in our 30s and hold bachelor's degrees. Are people making 6 digits a minority or we really did something wrong?

Can you provide more info please? For starters, what is your career? What is your degree? Can you say who you work for?

The estimated total pay range for a New Grad at Google is $141K–$238K per year, which includes base salary and additional pay. The average New Grad base salary at Google is $133K per year. The average additional pay is $49K per year, which could include cash bonus, stock, commission, profit sharing or tips.

Why would anyone want to work for Google? ChatGPT/AI is going to eventually make Google irrelevant. They have a toxic culture there as well.

Nice one

You should read "The Idea Factory" and learn about how predictions like this work out historically.

If you are a cpa, I would expect to earn more. It is very easy to get a masters part time. You could do that easily and increase your pay.

It is a decent salary but not much to raise a family in the dmv.

In stem? Then no. Just graduated kids and not at google or amazon get between 70-90k for cs and engineering. Thats what we hire at and we are not a big company. Teachers in MoCo start at $60k without a masters. So after 6 years and with a masters they are close to 80.

150k is enough to raise a family in the DMV. Many of us do it just fine.

It with a BA. Their BA lane stops at $77k, step 10.

I have a masters in Fairfax and after 15 years teaching I make $83. Years =\= steps, unfortunately.

Exactly. Even if years equaled steps, someone with a BA and 6 years isn’t making $80k in that profession.

80k is ok for the dc area.

We're both accountants.

My wife is an accountant in her 30s and making 170k. 80k is like 2nd year Big 4 accounting salary so I would expect that at more like 25 years old, not 30s.

The average accountant salary in the US is around 78k and the top 25% starts at around 101k. 170k is an unusual salary in most professions. You're really out of touch.

And the average doctor makes more than 200k. Most people aren't doctors or in STEM.

OP and partner make around 150k a year. That's considerably higher than the average household income in the area. Some of you have exoensive lifestyles and are out of touch.
