Is 80k a decent salary for a degree holder in his 30s?

Anonymous
After 6 years into my career, I started making around 80K which took a huge pressure from my partner, who is making 70K. We were both happy about our income increase, but hearing about all these people talking about six digit incomes makes me feel self-conscious, like we're failures. We're both in our 30s and hold bachelor's degrees. Are people making 6 digits a minority or we really did something wrong?

Yes, it's a decent salary.

Thanks! Makes me wonder how so many here are making 200k plus.

Yes, but it depends on the job/profession.

The estimated total pay range for a New Grad at Google is $141K–$238K per year, which includes base salary and additional pay. The average New Grad base salary at Google is $133K per year. The average additional pay is $49K per year, which could include cash bonus, stock, commission, profit sharing or tips.

Whatever. The vast majority of people aren’t in CS, Investment Banking, or corporate law. And 80 is a good salary!

I think the question is very vague. If you want good answers, provide more information about your degree and job.
80k is ok for the dc area.

Yes, it’s a decent salary. We happen to live in an area with some of the highest earners in the country, but don’t let that make you feel lesser!

If you and your wife are happy, like your jobs, can pay your bills and save , then enjoy life and don’t overthink it!

We're both accountants.

And there are many business owners making millions. Most people aren't CS graduates nor business owners, so what's the point?

80K is within the average range for degree holders. DCUM is full of well off people who like to brag. That's why you feel self-conscious.

"Degree holder" does not indicate much about salary.

Your salary depends on your degree/field/position.

Google what others are making in your role. For your area, are you being compensated fairly?

Here is some government data. Median for bachelor holders is $61k.

However, we would need to know your field and employer type (e.g., government, nonprofit, F500, family owned business) to accurately gauge whether $80k is “average.”

My wife is an accountant in her 30s and making 170k. 80k is like 2nd year Big 4 accounting salary so I would expect that at more like 25 years old, not 30s.
