3 year old cant poop

Well certainly talk to your dr again. Ours took constipation very seriously. Also go up on Miralax dose to 3/4 cap, and then more if that doesn’t cut it. I’d be hesitant to cut milk out entirely since that sounds like his hydration preference. As I recall our ped said keep the milk within reason but never recommended cutting out all the way.

Thank you!

Make an appointment with a GI doc if you haven't already. Constipation and withholding can lead to significant issues the longer it continues. My DS had success on ex-lax chocolate squares, while Miralax didn't really help.

We had no issue with milk, just upped the water intake. For my DS we put potty training on hold, so that he was comfortable pooping and stopped withholding. Once that was taken care of, then we moved back into potty training.

If you’re still in an immediate crisis, do a liquid glycerin suppository.

We did lots of water and fiber. Alternated 1x a day Miralax and Magnesium mixed into prune juice.

Our son was scared of pooping. We had to give him pep talks and even recorded an encouraging message from his older cousin.

Sweet potatoes and blueberries helped my daughter a lot. Cutting way back on dairy and then we did yogurt drinks instead of milk for the probiotics. Also Miralax for ages and ages. She's finally off it and pooping easily. It will get better and I'm so sorry you're going through this! It's really hard to watch them struggle!

This. My then 3 year and didnt poop for a week+ (we had a newborn too) and we ended up in crisis. It was hard, painful wouldn't come out. Clean out first and then a miralax regimen for 6 months and her colon was distended and didnt work properly if the poop was at all hard and she wqs so so scared for a while. We also pretty much stopped eating bread or rice for months for the same reason. At 4 days, pear juice is not going to work.
I had to get my kid to agree to a suppository and it took an hour to get her to be ok with the idea.

I've had this as a lifelong problem as long as I can remember. Something that has helped me immensely is Greek yogurt daily. (For some reason Chobani seems to work the best for me.)

This. We did everything. Sadly, we got the then-aspergers (ASD) diagnosis at 16. The peditrician never caught the SN issues nor the link of severe gastro problems with Aspergers/ASD. Only when we took DS to a pediatric gastro who knew of autism-related issues, did we get the diagnosis. He said by then (too late) SN had developed megacolon and had fecalomas. Look it up to see if it fits your situation.

1) Short term: glycerin suppository. I like these: https://www.amazon.com/Pedia-Lax-Glycerin-Suppositories-Constipation-Applicators/dp/B075MMWQF3/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?crid=1B0GIRU16YK6&keywords=pediatric+glycerin+suppositories&qid=1707329898&rdc=1&sprefix=pediatric+glycerin%2Caps%2C154&sr=8-4

2) Read It’s No Accident. It explains the logistics but basically withholding can cause serious issues and needs to be treated effectively or it’s just going to continue to get worse. Withholding causes the water in the poop to reabsorb back into the body, causing the poop to get harder so pooping hurts more, which causes more withholding…downward spiral. Those saying it’s psychological not physical are wrong; it’s both and they each reinforce the other.

3) Go see a GI specialist to break the cycle and get him back to square one so that it doesn’t become a longterm, major issue.

He is potty training now too so doesn’t help that he purposely holds poop for 4-5 days.

Dates mix them in other things or have them dip them in some melted chocolate just a bit. I chopped them up super small and froze some strawberries made an icy as treats.

Yogurt can help as well. Like a Dannon plain or vanlla let them add fruit or mini choc chips, not the kid yogurts too much sugar. Greek might work as well.

Miralax did not work for us either.

Mine did this as well holding in poop it was awful. I am sorry OP

Water lots of water which means potty training harder who cares forget that and get them pooping easier first.
