Philadelphia is bringing back mask mandates, for some reason

Total hysterical, knee-jerk move. I plan on going to Philly in May to celebrate my niece's graduation from college. We're going out to dinner and I (vaccinated and boosted) will not comply with any mask mandate to protect those who aren't.

This response is totally unnecessary and capricious.

Only the unvaccinated are getting it?

The unvaccinated are getting sicker and dying from it, more than the vaccinated.

So the vaccinated are getting sick.

Actually, it's based on metrics laid out a couple months ago.

It's not based on CDC metrics, it's based on total hysteria and their own "metrics"

DP. I'm ok with the new ones. They should have done these sooner but they didn't.

At their own risk. The midterms are coming.

Somewhat yes, but not as severely.

Some city leaders actually want to help the lives of Black and Brown residents. Shocking, I know

Is that statement at all evidence-based? Because it is wildly risky to say that following CDC guidance is racist.

You can help without restricting their freedom. Provide free KN95s for those who want them and easy access to shots. Optional masks with vaccines and boosters is fine.

Those residents probably won’t be helped in PA goes red. Lots of people in the middle in PA who do not like covid restrictions.

Is Philly using different metrics than what the CDC recommended or is their hospitalization rate really that bad?

They apparently are thinking that by the time hospitalizations go up to the CDC levels, masking isn't going to do that much to stop spread. Perhaps they are concerned with the %140 increase in cases over the last seven days, or the fact that less than 75% of their eligible population has gotten two doses of vaccine and only around 30% of those eligible have gotten boosters.

So…bring back a mask mandate to protect those that can’t be bothered to protect themselves? In any event, any short term gain from this may not be worth the long term political ramifications in a swing state like PA. Shrug.

Right- if this came back in MoCo or DC, annoying but whatever. Not likely to move the political needle. But this kind of stuff matters in a state like PA.

I live in Philly, which is deep blue politically. The suburbs are not affected by this change. It's hard to say if it'll have a political impact, maybe, maybe not.

I'm very curious to see if Philly diverges from other large East Coast cities in (admittedly unreliable) case counts after the mask mandate takes effect on Monday, assuming those cities don't reinstitute mandates too. Will be an interesting experiment.

I wonder if anyone will enforce the mandate at this point. It’s not like there is a Covid task force out to make people mask. It’s mostly minimum wage workers, who might not think it’s worth the trouble or care enough to tell people to wear a mask.
