Boys 2028 mess - considerations and solutions.

Anonymous
This thread is meant to discuss the state of the DMV boys 2028 club scene and to trade info and and opinions on the various clubs and showcase opportunities.

By my count there 6 current clubs with one or more teams at 28:

1. Next Level
2. Madlax
3. DC Express
4 true
5 Top Caliber
6. Team Va.

In addition there are two potential teams VLC and Black Wolf that may have 28 teams next summer.

Of the current clubs only NL, ML and DCE can claim to offer a team that competes at the elite level. Unfortunately, all of those teams are severely oversubscribed. Additionally, none of those teams appear to be particularly competitive.

My initial question: is there a team that can provide college recruiting support that isn’t oversubscribed?

Let's be clear, other than some random social media there is little college support from clubs.

Is this true? Are we all suckers for paying for club?

You need to play club for college coaches to see you. There just usually isn't a ton of recruiting support.

So should I just find the cheapest club? Or does “elite” really matter

I'm looking for a team for my son and would love to hear some info on this topic. I know ML, NL, and DCE well, so no need for info on them.

But do True, Top Caliber, Team VA, VLC and Blackwolf actually have 2028 teams (as opposed to merely planning one) in northern Virginia? if so, who is the coach and where do they practice?

You have an 8th grader, right? The odds of them getting D1 recruited are really, really low. The kids who will get recruited for D1 are mostly already on the top clubs. If you join the cheapest club your kid will play at tournaments that no college coach watches or only low level D3 coaches watch. If you are really dying for your kid to play D1 or high level D3 lacrosse and your kid has the talent to do it then you need to get on a top club.

You can find existing teams here:

True has multiple teams, Top Caliber has a team and Team Virginia has a team. Blackwolf is usually only HS, I don't think that has changed. Don't know about VLC - they have two teams listed but doesn't look like they have played any games yet.

I think the question really depends on the goal of the player. If going to play high level D1 you need to play for a top tier club that plays in the highest level events and probably play for a top tier private school. That is what worked for the majority of D1 kids at Prep Landon Gonzaga ect. Most do both. If not at a school like that then the club really matters a lot. My advice would be try to make a MD club like Hawks or Crabs many DMV kids have done this. When they get to HS you dont really need practice. All other players just looking to play some level of college can go to any of the local clubs. Go do showcases and prospect days and a good coach will find you. I have not clue what over subscribed means. If your son outplays the other player in his position, they will add them to the team. Rosters tend to change a great deal and despite the claims of "coaches favorite" I have seen the opposite at the HS level. Most clubs will easily replace a long term player with a better player to win and claim a recruit. There is not loyalty. If you want your son to play at the highest level have him beat out another player plain and simple

Op. Here thank you for taking the time to Give your thoughts. My son is fairly tall kid and fairly athletic. He played lacrosse for six years and loves it. We are going to a public high school with a good lacrosse program. He Dreams of playing college lacrosse at the highest level. Who knows what will actually happen but I want to keep his dream alive as long as I can.

I’ve been told to do this you have to go to Madlax DCE Or next level. I have friends with kids on all of those teams and they all say that the rosters are huge and many kids are not seeing any playing time.

The point is that if your kid is good enough to play at the highest level then he will be able to break through and get playing time on one of those teams. They will always make room for top talent. If he can’t get time on one of those teams he’s probably not good enough.

My theory is if you’re not getting playtime in ninth grade, you’re not getting better. So why try to break on to a team with 14 middies and 12 attack - just go to an under subscribed team or a new team like black wolf

OP sounds like a troll. If DS was talented player he'd tryout, earn a spot, and be sought after by multiple clubs. Real question seems to be: 'Is there a club team where less talented players can get playing time and develop?' Of course - you named six of them! But why worry about 'college recruiting support' now? Recruited kids, by definition, stand out on the field and beat out other kids for playing time. By OP's own admission, DS is not on that track. Question she should be asking is: 'How can I support my son and ensure he has a fun, enjoyable lacrosse experience?' Answer: Put your ego aside, let him be himself, and be proud of who he is.

Yeah this is all good advice. The bottom half to third of the rosters won’t get recruited by anywhere you’ve ever heard of. So if you don’t have a player that stands out and can easily make any of those clubs, they aren’t going to magically get D1 offers. If you have a really huge kid or a kid with elite speed for lacrosse then showcases, prospect, etc. can work. But for a non-huge kid without elite speed it would be very rare to get a good D1 offer if you are easily getting playing time on one of three clubs. And those clubs really show no loyalty to players so the tryout is a viable way to get in the teams
