Age versus bedtime

We used to eat dinner at 5:30 and aim to be reading bedtime story by 6:30. But with elementary school and sports schedules, we are often eating at 7 and in bed closer to 8. Sometimes he doesn’t sleep right away. Is he getting enough sleep? Wake up is at 7am or a little earlier.

I’m surprised that the teams near us catering to 6-7 year olds are scheduling games at 6:30. That seems so late for kindergarten players.

I forgot to mention on game nights we are not getting to bed at 8! Not even close.

(Please separate yourself from your child - you don't need to say "we are not getting to bed at 8!" unless YOU are aiming to be in bed at that time.)

You don't have to pick sports that have late practices/games. You can skip the reading. You can feed your child a simpler/quicker dinner.

There are all these options for you.

It absolutely is too late. Prioritize your child’s wellbeing over making him sleep deprived.

Nuts

+1 There is no justifiable reason to have a kid in bed before 9:00pm or sunset.

My kindergartner sleeps 7:45-6:45 every day.

My 3rd grader sleeps 9-6:30.

9pm let’s say she wakes up at 6:30. That’s less than 10 hours of sleep.

It’s late but sports are catering to working parents. A lot of the volunteer coaches work too.
We have at dinner at 4 to get around it slightly and then do a snack when we get home or in the car on the way home not making dinner and cleaning up at 7pm.
At 6-7yo my kid still needed 11- 12 hours of sleep so if getting up at 7 needed to be in bed by 7-8 most nights.

There is justifiable reason a 6yo needs to be until 9pm. That’s too late for a kid at school all day.

No justifiable reason, above.

Bedtime story at 6:30? Is this real life

I mean heck, my 13 year old is tired by 8pm! She relaxes in bed, goes to sleep at 9, and when she has late practice that makes her go to bed at 10pm or beyond, she's extra tired and grumpy the next day. She wakes up naturally by 6am, no matter how late the bedtime, so we go to great lengths to keep to an "early" bedtime (for a teen). Her friends stay up all night chatting. I don't know how they function!

You've got to parent the kid you have. His sleep needs must dictate your schedule.

I know some ten year old kids still going to bed at 7. It’s a crazy world out there
