I’m surprised that the teams near us catering to 6-7 year olds are scheduling games at 6:30. That seems so late for kindergarten players.

Nuts

+1 There is no justifiable reason to have a kid in bed before 9:00pm or sunset.

9pm let’s say she wakes up at 6:30. That’s less than 10 hours of sleep.

8 hours is enough.

The range of normal sleep needs is enormous, actually. You really have to observe your kid and see how they do. I know my son and I need at least 8 hours of sleep as adults. My Godmother (not a relation) needs even more. And then my husband has lived for years on 6 hours of sleep.

This is one reason (of several) my kid doesn't play team sports. Even at age 10 she needs 10-11 hours of sleep or we all feel it the next day. Plus homework, instrument practice, family dinner.
That doesn't mean she's not active. Pick an athletic activity that works for your schedule, because the team practices only get later and later.

8 hours is not enough for a kindergartener. Look it up.

All the elementary kids I teach say they’re tired all the time and can not focus on class. It’s not nuts to have kids go to bed earlier. Honestly, it’s no wonder we have discipline problems at school. Parents who think 9pm is appropriate bedtime for a 6 year old is probably letting their 10/11 year old stay up until 11pm. They can’t focus!!!

My 8yo is an 815-645 sleeper. And if he not in bed by 745, he completely looses it...do I wish it was later, sure...but he's super conscious of it and asks to go to bed. What am I supposed to say? Some of his classmates are night owls and are rarely in bed before 930 or 10 and sleep until 7-8... But I agree it's crazy that some activities start late.

She relaxes in bed, goes to sleep at 9, and when she has late practice that makes her go to bed at 10pm or beyond, she's extra tired and grumpy the next day. She wakes up naturally by 6am, no matter how late the bedtime, so we go to great lengths to keep to an "early" bedtime (for a teen). Her friends stay up all night chatting. I don't know how they function!

You've got to parent the kid you have. His sleep needs must dictate your schedule.

Ha! I was your daughter. I had to be in bed by 9 at the absolute latest...I'm still like that. My college friends still make fun of me for that, 25 years later some of us just can't stay up late.

My first grader is a 9:30/10:00 pm - 7:45 am sleeper. Did I wish he went to bed earlier? Of course. Have I tried everything and anything to get him to sleep earlier? Of course. Have I talked to his pediatrician? Of course.

My Pre-K daughter is 8:00 pm - 6:45 am, religiously.

The range of sleep for kids is so varied. You do you, but also 6:30 is likely the earliest that working parents can make. That’s where you adapt and do car dinners, no baths that night, etc.

What time does your school start? If the kids have to get up before about 7:30 to get to school then the school schedule needs to change.

6:30 story time is insanity

Is this just for the spring season or all year? Our leagues try to schedule the younger kids earlier, but may end up with the 1st graders (who would be 6-7) with games at 6:30 so they can get the younger age group (5-6 year old kindergarteners) in at 5:00.

I don’t think it’s a big deal for a short period of time or a couple nights a week, but we never had 6:30 story time either.

I struggled with this. My son has always been a high sleep needs kid and an early riser. In K he went to sleep at 7pm. We didn't do week night activities for that reason. He started a sport with weeknight practices that ran 6 to 7pm the later half of 1st. We ate dinner before and came straight home to bed after. Now he is 9 and still goes to sleep before 830. He has nights with sports when hes not home until 800 and its always rough. We try our best to make bedtime quick and always eat dinner early and then a snack in the car on the way home.

In my family, sleep is more important than kindergarten sports. So we don’t do leagues with evening games on weeknights. Not worth it, and not the value I want to model. We value (1) emotional calm and (2) education, both of which require adequate sleep for my kids.

I mean... it's INSANE that you need to point this out, and that others need to argue FOR sleep!

Some posters on here are crazy. This is how you shorten your kids' lifepans, people. Maybe you don't care. But that's what you're doing.

OP

6:30 story time was during preschool. And the first couple weeks when kindergarten was exhausting. But I still think going to bed at 8:30, 9 or even later is too late for this age

Unless your kids are able to sleep in, but mine has to get up at 7 or a little after.
