Affirming, post-evangelical community

Anonymous
Hello,

My husband and I have recently decided to move to a queer affirming church. This is a big change from our tradition, and we are a bit unmoored in where to go. Mainline affirming churches don't feel right for a few reasons, one of which being that they seem to lean heavy on older, more traditional worship styles. Which are great! Just not what we connect best with.

What churches are out there (ideally within 20 min of Arlington), that are affirming, still hold a high view of Scripture, and have a more modern environment?

Affirming but with a high view of Scripture would be a unicorn. Or one of those things does not mean what you think it means.

Only to a true bigot. There is nothing in the scripture that supports your view.

OP here: ugh I knew there'd be some nay-sayers... Not here for that just scroll on by. But if curious, this is a great resource that walks through thoroughly a Scripture-based, affirming position: https://reformationproject.org/

The Table Church in DC seems to fit but is probably too far? https://www.thetablechurch.org/

What church are you leaving?

The Falls Church Episcopal. (You will very much want to avoid The Falls Church Anglican, which splintered off from TFCE and is decidedly not queer affirming.)

You're correct that more of the affirming churches are mainline and non-contemporary at least in music (Episcopal, some Methodist/Presbyterian). We used to go to a Methodist church that had both a traditional service and a more contemporary service (though it was stuck in 1995).

You could try to find affirming churches here: https://www.churchclarity.org/find-a-church

It doesn't detail their worship style though.

Op, have you spoken to your pastor about why you are leaving? what did he say?

Commonwealth baptist in alexandria is very affirming but has a contemporary feel. I’m not entirely sure what you mean by ‘a high view of scripture’ so I can’t comment on that.

Why do many ops in this forum never respond to the people who give them the advice they request? They ask and disappear. Rude.
