Hi! I'm looking for a recommendation for a Harry Potter like book, but that's appropriate for a 7 year old. My 7 yr old has read the first 3 books, but I don't think the scary/ murder content of the 4th book is appropriate just yet. Any book recommendations for a strong child reader? Thanks! |
Wings of fire
Upside down magic |
Mysterious Benedict Society
Chronicles of Narnia |
Diana Wynne Jones, especially Charmed Life and the other Chrestomanci books |
Good suggestion. Lloyd Alexander’s Prydain Chronicles are great Maybe Gregor the Overlander |
That will desensitize the kid to murder, clearing the way for Harry Potter. |
Nevermoor series |
Try the Bruce Coville Magic Shop books:

Thank you all for so many great suggestions! My child said he didn't like the wings of fire. I remember reading Bruce Coville when I was a kid. Can't wait to take him to the library. |
The Land of Stories |
+1 for the Prydain Chronicles |
Original version of Wizard of Oz and sequels.
I liked Ozma of Oz. |
The Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper (confusingly the first book is called Over Sea, Under Stone and the second book is The Dark is Rising)
Juniper and Wise Child by Monica Furlong |
+1 I was going to suggest this! |
