How to teach kiddo to read?

Anonymous
Hi there! My 5 year old will be starting Kindergarten in August. She is very interested in reading… her current daycare/pre-k is not “allowed” to teach reading. (It’s a govt regulated facility which is play based… totally cool). But there’s so much out there. Where do I start? Thank you!

First, don’t say kiddo as it’s not a word.

Bob books or teach your child to read in 100 lessons or less.

You read to them often, follow the words with your finger. Help them with what letters sound like; whether it's singing songs, playing music, etc. It should be fun. And if they aren't there in August, it's fine.

Is kiddo a word?

Does she know letters and letter sounds?

Look up some basics phonics. I think learning to read is much more than following along with your parents while reading.

I wouldn't push it too much though. Talk about letter sounds, vowels too, and then learn some CVC words.

Plus, there are a lot of good tablet apps that they can use daily. I have had success with the Reading Eggs App. Other people include Kahn Academy Kids, ABC Mouse, and Homer. In addition to teaching phonics, site word practice is helpful. We do 10 minutes of site words flashcards and DC reads a bob book to me every night (the whole process takes 15 minutes), then I read a bigger chapter book to DC until DC falls asleep.

Ha. I clicked on this thread only to say that. Why do people do this? Just use child/daughter/son. So stupid.

Read to your kid daily. Point out a word or two as you say them every now and then. That worked for my kids.

People who use "kiddo" generally fall into the same genre as people who say comfy and yummy.

When talking to someone specifically. As in "Hey Honey, hand me that cup". Not as in "how do I teach honey to drive?"
