I don't get the Eclipse madness!

Anonymous
I'm 44. I feel like these things have happened pretty frequently in my lifespan, yet the buildup around them is crazy! I have no interest in participating in any of this - pulling my kids out of school to go to the Smithsonian, for example? (And I'm totally a parent that would pull them for stuff, I just don't get this!) I guess I sort of have some FOMO, but really...why is this a big deal?

The next one is 20 years from now.

Same - wasn't there just one a few years ago? We took a break from work to see it but I wasn't that impressed. Don't understand spending the crazy amount on hotels and travel times to see it.

I mean, we all have different things we get excited for. I couldn't fathom the madness around a taylor swift concert, going to innauguration, or the super bowl. This one's kind of cool in my opinion though.

I can't get worked up about something that has a decent chance of being obscured by clouds.

I’m excited about it but it feels like all of our celestial events are usually clouded over so I’m cautiously optimistic that we see it here.

+1. We are going to see the eclipse because the grandparents live in the zone of totality so it will be a fun family experience. We didn’t go to see Taylor Swift, go to the inauguration, watch the Super Bowl, March Madness, the World Cup, etc. I don’t enjoy those things but I am perfectly capable of understanding that my preferences are not everybody’s preferences and that other people have interests that I don’t share.

The next one in the U.S. They happen almost yearly but of course not always convenient. Like over the ocean.

I am a little surprised that people are touting that you must see totality. Seeing partial coverage of the sun is exciting too. Also, it’s cool to witness celestial events near your hometown. Where are these people when there is a meteor shower, a comet, a special alignment of planets. I don’t hear any one talk about chasing other astronomical events like this solar eclipse. We follow all special events—big or small. We mark our calendars for harvest moons, blood moons, meteor showers, etc. But, I never hear much chatter about these events like this upcoming solar eclipse. It is bizarre.

I agree. Overrated. Give me Housewives or TikTok.

Totally agree. It was an excuse for the SAHMs to day drink, that’s all I remember.

Don’t care about this one either. I’m an outlier though as I don’t care about space. Why ruin space when we can’t even fix Detroit? The eclipse holds no allure for me. I mean it’s neat- I like alignment and astronomy- but the flying all over to admire the natural world kills the natural world.

This one is a little different than the ones past because the zone of totality is wider and it will last longer. More Americans will be able to participate than ever.

Yes! Remember those pics of Trump staring directly at it??

I’m traveling to Texas to see it and it’s obnoxiously expensive to travel to some of these rural places to see the total eclipse. I hope it’s worth it.

True. There will be on in 2026 in Greeland and Iceland, but it's a lot easier to go to Ohio or Pennsylvania on Monday.
