Colicky baby - out of the box ideas

Anonymous
I have an extremely colicky one month old baby. Right now on Similac Alimentum.

Looking for out of the box ideas, like, hold him over your head. Sing the star Spangled Banner. I dunno, something to help me get through the hours.

Preferably things that don't require my phone. It's not good for my mental health to spend hours scrolling.

I’m so sorry, OP.

Noise canceling headphones for you are a must. It’s exhausting to listen to a baby cry or fuss for long periods of time for no apparent reason.

It’s okay sometimes to put baby down for a few minutes and go into another room to save your sanity.

Weirdly some pressure on the belly seems to help so Superman hold or massaging belly gently sometimes worked well.

Can you both take a walk in the neighborhood?

Powder alimentum or ready to feed version?

My mother spent her time with me (the colicky baby) memorizing Shakespeare soliloquies just to keep herself sane. She still knows maybe 6 or 7 of them by heart 30 years later.

I do take breaks and you're right, I've noticed that sometimes works. Everything seems to work sometimes. The problem is getting anything to work continuously.

Walk outside for hours a day. Even in rain and cold.

So I could, but not if he's actively screaming.... I'll probably end up reported to cps.

He doesn't stop just because we happen to be outside in a stroller.

Powder. Is there a difference?

Good uck, mom! This is so hard, and really affected my mental health. Switching to nutramigen or alimentum did help my kid after about 48 hours. He always had reflux though, and still does even at 8 years old!

Wearing the baby and going on walks or putting on an aerobics video helped too. the Witching Hour at around 5pm was teh worst.

This is a hard time. It does get easier.

Check for silent reflux and get meds as needed. Alimentum

I love this idea. Thank you! I can probably memorize one or two. It's a good item to have in my list.

Creeps on this petty pace from day to day, indeed...

And my baby is definitely 'fretting his hours upon the stage!'

I know you said not using your phone, but Id suggest using it to watch something behind the baby (netflix), so not scrolling. Put the baby in the carrier and walk around the house/apartment watching your favorite show behind them. Mine would scream from 10pm until 2 or 3 am but only kind of cry if I was walking/bouncing.

Swaddling really helped my colicky baby as did the baby swing, in addition to alimentum.

This does not work once he has ramped up the crying.
