Colicky baby - out of the box ideas

This. And it turned out my baby was allergic to milk and soy so we had to use EleCare.

You poor thing, this brings me right back to the 8+ months of colic with our baby! The only thing that slightly appeased him was if we wore him in the Boba wrap and did bouncing lunges down the hallway.

We walked him all over the neighborhood while he screamed his head off. Our neighbors still see him out and about and say, oh, the little wailer!

For you, get big over the ear noise canceling headphones and some great podcasts or audiobooks. And wine. Lots of wine.

OP- your baby’s crying sounds like a fighter jet to you. To others, it sounds like a kitten. A newborn crying is not as loud as you think. Toddlers? Different story, but a newborn sounds like a teeny critter.

We left a trail of yoga balls around the world when my first was an infant. We were living abroad and traveled a lot to see family, which made it particularly hard for a baby with reflux, cow’s milk and soy allergies. And eczema. Bouncing on a yoga ball was the only way to get him to sleep.

Just want to tell you to hang in there OP. I promise this will pass even if it feels like it never will. Sometimes I am amazed that I survived to very colicky babies. It’s so freakin hard and mentally draining.

Here are my best tips (in addition to doing to see a Peds GI):
- Zippadee zip swaddles, they were truly lifesavers
- good probiotics
- a good baby carrier and just walk and walk and walk
- get a babysitter for a few hours a week if you can swing it so you can take care of yourself (it’s so important). If that’s not possible, see if your partner, a parent/sibling/friend can come over everyone once in a while to just hold you baby and walk around (trust me, they won’t mind the crying and fussing the way a mom does)

Op
Looks like we're headed that way

I have babysitters, but I also have elderly neighbors. How inappropriate to ask them if they want to hold him while he screams? I could make a neighborhood sign up chart. I doubt any pedophile wants to hold a screaming tiny baby.

My baby sounds like this: https://youtu.be/_AUtYTaYMrE?si=GZjKj7o_Tx3_kp8R

Only worse, because I can't turn him off like a YouTube video.

And he's cuter than the baby in that video in my opinion. He's wearing cuter pajamas.

It's surprisingly hard to find colicky baby videos - it's all "how to soothe colic in one second".

OP I am glad you are retaining your sense of humor. I could not. Im the PP who had a daycare provider of 20 years say she was no longer able to care for him while our ped brushed me off and another ped in the office said reflux wasnt real i was just a FTM who didnt understand that babies cry and to get assessed for anxiety/depression. Yes, I am anxious and depressed because my child cries constantly but thanks!

I went to specialists after that (GI and ENT) and only took my kid to the ped for well visits. The ENT did a scope and he had laryngomalacia (stopped breathing twice and thats what got me to finally say f u to the peds) and visible damage from reflux. We did weight dependent dosing of meds through year 1. GI said to continue breastfeeding if I could remove all dairy, which I did for 2.5 years. He did not react to soy but many babies in groups that I was in also had issues with soy and eggs. Since you are using formula, the latter isnt an issue but it was for some breastfeeding moms.

He still does not tolerate milk at age 6. Will likely never grow out of it. But its not an allergy. Bodies are weird.

He has a new thing . If you put the bottle in his mouth when he's upset he won't suck on it. He just cries louder (which is how I learned that was possible).

He's also refusing a pacifier a lot of the time. I did take a walk with him earlier and he was quiet the entire time, but now he's screaming again.

I started him on gerber comfort probiotic drops this morning. He seems terribly gassy and his poop is back to black tar.

Pediatrician referred us to GI but I was too tired to follow up today.

I don't think he's taking in as much formula as before, period, so probably another weight check.

Apologies for my disorganized thoughts.
Tldr: has anyone had a baby get angry when offered a bottle or pacifier?

If eating makes him feel bad, it makes sense that he doesn't want to do it! You will get through this, op. I hope the gi has ideas for you. And do not be afraid to put him down somewhere safe and take a shower. Your health matters too.

I had a thread on here that I'm too traumatized to even dig up. I think the title was something like "my baby is trying to kill me", would have been 2021. But to summarize, my DD had colic and absolutely refused a bottle (or cup, sippy, syringe, we tried everything). If it wasn't breastmilk from the tap, she would literally starve herself and cry for HOURS until her lips turned blue. I even had to change jobs to WFH and nurse.

Happy to report that she is the chillest, most laid back, go with the flow, hilarious toddler and we get complements everywhere we go about how well behaved and sweet she is. There will be an end.

It could be a bottle aversion and if so, it means his reflux is pretty severe because he is avoiding the bottles because bottle = pain. I’m sorry. Keep pushing, try the elecare, and ask about other meds. Some babies end up temporarily on a tube. Not saying this to scare you but just to motivate you to keep pushing. Sorry you’re going though this. It’s one of the hardest things but as said elsewhere it DOES PASS
