So I'm going to try to make traditional Portuguese Folar easter cake. The recipe calls for "lard"....can I use Crisco Vegetable Shortening instead? Or stick to "real" lard like this: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Armour-Lard-Net-Weight-16-oz-1-lb-454-g/476700867?from=/search?? |
No. That would make a huge oily mess. Just use some butter or go to a hispanic store and buy lard. |
You could try coconut oil or bacon grease, but it may change flavor |
Crisco was created to be a substitute for lard, it'll work but the flavor will be different. |
Crisco will work! |
Thanks for all responses!
I didn't know that Crisco was created to replace lard. I wanted to make as authentic as possible folar so I was actually able to find lard at Walmart. |
I would use butter because it has a pleasant after taste |
Butter has a much lower melting point so it’s not as good a replacement for lard. I’d say Crisco or stick with lard. Suet might work. |
It will taste a little different and not as authentic. It’s made with lard for a reason. |
You can get lard at Food Lion next to crisco. Use the lard for a more authentic taste. Eat it once a year. The lard won’t kill you, unless you are vegan. |
And it won’t “kill” a vegan. Only their ego. |
