Who created the so-called Big 3, Big 5, Big 10, etc.? I noticed a thread pinned at the top, and I was curious to know how it came about. Was it based on college outplacement, where the wealthy sent their kids, SAT scores, etc.? Does anyone know? Does the Big 3 change year to year? I know there are a lot of great schools in the area, I just wonder why it's such a polarizing topic on this board. |
This is discussed in the thread pinned at the top. |
It’s contentious because there *isn’t* and official designation from some recognized authority, just moderately successful (or not) consensus from the users of this board. Who as you may have noticed tend to have strong opinions and disagree on many things. |
Hey, OP: Get a life. |
It's silly and you should ignore it and not use the term yourself. |
If you’re in Big 3 you know it. If you aren’t you know it too |
I've only ever heard it hear on DCUM. |
The Big 3 was created by Arnold, Jack and Gary
The Big 5 was created by Penn, La Salle, St. Joe's, Temple and Nova The Big 10 was created by the presidents of U Chicago, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Northwestern and Wisconsin. None of these terms have any real meaning here, other than in the small minds of a group of prestige whores that populate DCUM. |
Does the thread being pinned perpetuate the phrase? Did it create the phrase or is it used conversationally anywhere? |
Exactly |
Agree. Thanks for starting yet another thread that will bring out these people. |
Big 1 = BIM
And it’s not close. |
It very much depends on who you are. Different groups in the DMV private school world have different Big 3's and wouldn't send their kids to other schools if they were free. |
Yeah, I think it is probably time to un-pin that thread. |
Disagree. It’s a good reminder of how large yet sensitive the egos are on this board. |
