Does the thread being pinned perpetuate the phrase? Did it create the phrase or is it used conversationally anywhere?

Yeah, I think it is probably time to un-pin that thread.

Why? Un-pinning the post will not extinguish the discussion/debate.

And it’s not close.

Let it go.

I had heard it used to describe HPY as the “big three” colleges, and later the three math/science NYC high schools, and assumed it was adopted from those contexts.

To answer OP’s question…I always thought it was Sidwell, GDS and STA/NCS(as one). No?

No it was Sidwell, STA and NCS.

People keep trying to add on: GDS, Potomac, Holton. The list keeps growing.

But the top 3 schools are Sidwell, STA and NCS

This is the correct answer. Sidwell/STA/NCS are the oldest, most established schools with the strongest reputations (currently and historically).

If you’re talking about the Big 5, then you would include GDS.

Big three today in 2024 in terms of difficulty of getting in (aka acceptance rate) and college admissions results:

1. GDS
2. Sidwell
3. St Albans/NCS

for Big 5 add:
4. Potomac
5. Maret

Nope. Anytime you have to qualify the answer, you know it’s wrong. GDS is not harder to get into than Sidwell (last year’s ANC-related issues aside), and it certainly doesn’t have better college admissions (currently or in the past)—take a look at the 2024 Instagram pages.

I say we make it a drinking game. Every time a BIM booster infiltrates a thread we take a shot.

Thank you, this is your annual reminder of who the Big 3 are &
you’re welcome

Yes, it's this.

STA and NCS are strongly affiliated. They share a campus, buildings, fields, some classes, and were established in the same place. STA used to be called "NCS for Boys." I've always viewed it as one school system so to speak.

Also, it’s not as if one student would have a choice between NCS and STA, so a lot of folks count them as one school.

Alternatively, others argue that STA is top three but NCS only top 5 or top 10, or vice versa, so they shouldn’t be ranked together.

All to reiterate, the “Big 3/5” is a made-up DCUM thing that DCUM can’t even agree on.

It is not used conversationally anywhere (and if you say it, people will know you spend too much time here, lol).
