Freaking out - cooked with a decent amount of wine at 12w

Anonymous
I’m 12w and don't drink, even before pregnancy. Last night we made risotto with a recipe w/ white wine. My googling said that "most" cooks out. In hindsight, it was ton, 8 oz (1 cup/1.6 glasses) for 3-4 servings, and the rice probably absorbed a lot. I am wrecked thinking about it. It cooked for a while, but the pan was small so I still likely ingested 2-3 oz wine over ~10 minutes. I would guess that my tolerance is quite low and after I stopped eating I felt slightly warm and started to panic.

I’m finding a lot of people online who said they drank before they knew they were pregnant, but the limited research I am finding says that there is no safe amount and second half of first tri is most dangerous. Has anyone been here?

I wouldn't really worry about cooked wine in food.

"There is no safe amount" means "we have no good clinical data indicating that any particular amount, however small, is safe." It doesn't mean "any amount is dangerous" let alone "any amount is equally dangerous." Many women continue to drink in small amounts during their pregnancies, in the US and elsewhere. Many women drank in not-so-small amounts before we had a good idea of the dangers, and most of their kids were perfectly fine! A glass of wine in the first trimester is not a big deal, a glass worth of wine in food is REALLY not a big deal. FAS happens when pregnant women binge drink. Your baby is fine. You are fine. You'll be okay.

OMG you're fine. Relax.

This. You can’t be serious op. Even if only half the alcohol cooked out, you basically had an ounce of wine. No offense, but you’re being ridiculous.

Don't worry OP you only lose pregnancies after 12 weeks if you have a clotting disorder like me

The alcohol will have mostly cooked off. You’re completely fine.

Are you a hypochondriac? Because this is a non-issue.

Although you’ll be fine

Why would you even cook something like that if you were going to freak out?

That’s like, going to the sushi place, eating the raw fish and then saying oh I’m just realizing I probably shouldn’t of done that

Weird but ok

Your stress about the wine is more risky than the wine.

Either OP is a troll or a sad example of what happens when theres so much shaming of women who choose to drink responsibly during pregnancy. Enjoy the anxiety and neurosis….

there really is no “drinking responsibly” during pregnancy. The issue is that OP didn’t actually drink anything and what, if any alcohol she absorbed through cooked food was negligible .

These are the meanest and least helpful responses I’ve ever seen.

OP, I would feel exactly the same as you. I did not drink at all during pregnancy for this reason. That said, once baby was here, I found many, MANY ways to screw up and be a suboptimal parent. Yes, you consumed a tiny bit of alcohol. No one can say it’s definitely fine but it’s very very likely to be fine. It’s time to start working on channeling this anxiety into how you can do better next time and then mentally totally moving on. Dwelling on guilt of mistakes is toxic to parenting. I know this from experience. You cannot do anything about this now, so you MUST forget about it and move on. You’ll need this skill once baby is born and you make terrible mistakes much more regularly.
