Unpopular opinion: DCPS teachers are super well paid!

Anonymous
We just got our school budget. Our librarian makes $140k. Most teachers make about $130k and they work for 9 months per year and they get a pension.
I am happy for them but people have to stop with pressuring parents to give them gift cards, valentine presents and all the talk about them not being well paid.

This is not valid in other states. I am just talking about DCPS and probably DC metro and other big cities.

That’s it 🙂

Yes, it is unpopular to consider salaries without considering cost of living. Unpopular because it's dumb and/or disingenuous.

I don’t disagree with you, and I’m a teacher. But one misunderstanding is that the “price” of a teacher in the budget is not our salary. It’s the average total cost (benefits too) for all teachers.

I know teachers in other states making $35,000.

You can see the max salary of a 10 month teacher is $131k. I’m not sure most teachers are on the PhD scale.

Also, what 3 months don’t teachers work? 😂

Yes and a significant percentage of DCPS graduates do not read beyond a third grade level. Way to go DCPS. Exhibit A in systemic racism.

OP here. cost of living is not a factor here because I am comparing to people living in the same area. I make similar salaries as teacher in DC and I actually live in DC. I have 3 weeks of vacation and no pension. But I am expected to hand gift cards to teachers 3-4 times a year, plus volunteer for all kind of events, donate to the PTO and help with all kind of classroom requests.

Don’t get me wrong, I think teachers deserve their salaries but all the extra parents are expected to do is a bit over the top!

The truth is that many people would not choose to work in DCPS without the high pay.

OP here, this is correct, which is why the post says DCPS!

No one is forcing you to do those things. Most teachers don't actually care about getting gift cards. You are lucky that your dcps school has an active PTA for you to donate to. Most DCPS schools don't have that

I don't know if you're trolling or misinformed but that's not what teachers actually make. The pay scale is readily available online. But thanks for making us feel even worse at a time when our schools are having staffing cuts, we're working under an expired contract, and morale is at an all time low.

FWIW, it's 121, not 131

Correct. The budget cost in our school budget allocations are NOT the salaries of employees. Teachers and staff are public employees. One can easily look up their actual salary to confirm that the budget cost number is not the salary.

I would add that all of the DCPS teacher we have had (title 1 EOTP school) have been really awesome.
