Assume HHI around $800k. Which would you choose between Manhattan, BK, Northern burbs? |
With that HHI I would choose Brooklyn or Manhattan.
With less than 400k I would choose the burbs. |
I’d probably try to get into Larchmont if I could. Preferably walkable to the town center. I would not want the hassle of navigating the NYC private school rate race and the schools in Larchmont are pretty good. Plus the town center is cute. |
NYC no question. |
I brought up my kids in NYC. I could get to work after dropping off the kids at school and still be the first one in the office. Then later the kids commuted on their own to middle school and their afterschool activities. I could also participate in school activities without killing my workday. We had home cooked family dinners together every night because the commute was only about 30 min.
In high school some of the sports meets were in the outer boroughs so an uber was involved but I can say that we've never really had to chauffeur them anywhere. The public transit system has good coverage. The downside is the kids don't have a zest to learn how to drive. Once my youngest finishes high school I'm getting out of the city. Sick of the homeless, the general lawlessness, the faux sense of community (i.e. lack thereof). Plus I have an aging parent so should be there for my elder. |
This is unclear. Do you mean raising kids in either upstate or NYC or going on a vacation with kids in one of these places? |
Isn't this why they invented Connecticut ? |
Op - raise kids. We are already in nyc and need to upsize home. I could give a thousand more pieces of context but I would rather hear general thoughts! But I will say the kids already exist and are in elementary in city (private) |
Op - sure: Ct/ westchester. I prefer westchester but could be Ct for sure |
We made the move from downtown to the northern suburbs during covid and I could not believe how much easier everything was. I thought it was not that hard in NYC, but just, for example, letting the kids run around in the backyard vs. taking them to a park, was a huge difference. I can even just stay inside and watch them. Not having to dodge panhandlers/crazies was also eye opening. I'd also do Larchmont to minimize commute. The whole school thing was also so much easier and way more chill. |
We raised the kids in the suburbs until around 6th grade, then moved to the city. That's been perfect for us. |
Bronxville or Eastchester, Westchester |
NYC! |
The burbs. |
Stay in the city at that hhi
