7/24/23 Trial of Usman Shahid -- driver who killed two Oakton teens

He’d be covered by his parents’ policy, like every teenager driving on a learner’s permit. The fact that he drove the car in a manner not authorized by his permit likely wouldn’t be grounds for the insurer to deny liability coverage. Whether they could deny coverage for the BMW is a more interesting question.

Too many teens are being raised thimking they can pretty much do what they want and that pumishment isn't fair.

Going 80+ where you should be going maximum 35 is a disrespect to not only YOUR OWN life but to the other lives in the car with you, and lives in other cars, pedestrians.

Sure.
Crocodile tears that say " I could have cared less about the girls at the time, but I don't want to go to jail".
Not working for him.

I doubt it. He is a young kid with life in turmoil before he even graduated high school and probably has mental trauma from the accident and aftermath plus fear of future, likely his tears were very natural.

What tears? I was in court today. He did not cry, his friends did but not Usman!

During his statement? Weird, the reporter said he did.

His atty prepared a carefully worded statement that sounds apologetic at first glance, but still leaves room for Shahid to contest the judge's rulings, undermining the validity of the verdict.

He's sorry for his actions, but really it was the other guy's fault (that's what he means).

Was he wearing a sweater and a light blue shirt? Anyone who was there?

He had on black suit and white shirt.

There were no tears! His friends cried, he did not!

Will he ever be allowed to drive? I hope not. I bet he gets 10 years.

I promise you he did not cry. I was in the court room. He was reading from a paper and kept stumbling on his words, which made his statements even more insincere in my opinion! He could have looked at the victims parents and expressed remorse and sorrow but he never did! His apology was very generic, similar to someone breaking your window by accident vs killing your child!!

His mom "fainted" while Ada's mom was giving her victim impact statement. She explained how she had to go into a room to identify her daughters belongings and next she saw her baby girl in a cold room "forever asleep". I think it took Usmans mom hearing the victims moms experience to understand the magnitude of what her son had done! She was taken out of the court room to a separate room and later transported to the hospital.

I feel like the family may be used to using $$$ to fix problems, but this is a problem that money can't fix.

(((My opinions)))

Again, its all about the defense. Disgusting. Victim's mother couldn't even complete her statement w/o defense playing the victim.

I don't know but insurance companies seem to cover people with several DUIs though they seem to be continued threat so who knows, he only has one accident on record. I was against him getting a harsh sentence but totally agree with for losing driving privilege.

Why would a middle age mother having an emotional breakdown seeing their child going to prison has to be a defense strategy? Don't make assumptions. She isn't on trial.

Will court resume today for the sentence? How soon can they appeal? This case seems drawn out. Or maybe not. I feel so bad for the victims and their families. I hope they one day can find peace. Unfortunately the death of child is the worst pain any parent can go through.

Yes, it resumes today. Presumably the jury will finish so they don’t have to show up Monday. Shahid can appeal promptly but I’m not aware of any basis for reversing the verdict. He’ll likely attack the judge’s decision to admit the learner’s permit into evidence, but that’s almost certainly not going anywhere.
