Moving to LA

Anonymous
Hi! We currently have small children and my husband got a opportunity for a good job in LA, pay will be similar to what it is now. We currently live in a 4 bedroom in Tenleytown. What areas are best to live in, we want to be close to the beach and have a house similar to ours in Tenleytown (we are planning on selling) and my husband and I will both be remote so we do not have to worry about the commute. Also not sure about public v private schools, we would love good public schools at least until high school.

depends on your budget

IMO, the best high budget neighborhood for young families with good schools (both public and private) is Pacific Palisades. Starter homes here are 3M

person who lives in Pacific Palisades here (used to live in Arlington)

LA is so huge. Tell us what town your DH will be working in, and we will work out from there.

You probably won't get the same house you have here in DC unless you have $$$$

Do you want urban or suburban experience ?

Need budget info.

You say beach - aim for Santa Monica. Best school district, safe, walkable part of town. We had our kids in pre-K and ES there not long ago.

For a more suburban location and if you don't mind driving over the mountain to get to the beach, look at Westlake Village, Agoura area.

Agree, beach is only 20 mins and Agoura and Westlake Village have great public schools.

I would check out Pasadena if you want something similar to Tenleytown. Also if commute is no issue you could look further out in Irvine where there are great public schools and a very planned, safe suburban feel.

Pasadena schools suck. South Pasadena / San Marino school are high ranking. But then it's got a knock-on effect with real estate. Houses and apartments are very much more expensive and the rental market is almost non-existent. What you can rent in those areas are often dives.

Santa Monica, Brentwood, or Westwood.

Santa Monica at the top of that list.

Sounds like LA is a more expensive city, so moving for same pay would not be a lateral move?

According to this (not sure how accurate) LA housing is 30% more expensive than DC: https://www.bestplaces.net/compare-cities/washington_dc/los_angeles_ca/costofliving
