If you were raised in a card-playing family

What was your family’s game? What other classic card games do you know and will you teach your children?
I grew up playing Spades, my husband’s family was Hearts. My older relatives all knew Bridge and claimed we would all learn one day but no one seemed to have the same motivation for that one and now they are all gone. My kids play Spades and Hearts. We will probably teach them Euchre and Pinochle which we learned from friends who play them as their family’s game. Are those the main 5? |

Our family loved cards. When we got to be teenagers, we loved Oh Hell, Spades, Hearts, Euchre, 500, and a German card game called Skat.
When we were younger, our parents played Fantan, Casino, Steal the Old Man's Bundle with us. We were also long promised Bridge and never taught it. |

| Spades was big. Bid whist as well, when we got together with the older relatives. It was so great when I finally got old enough and good enough to join the bid whist game. My mom and I played a game called Thousand that no one else has ever heard of. I love games of all kinds. With my kids we play uno and crazy eights. |

Spoons, speed, gin rummy, Crazy eights, Cribbage, Snap, Spit (is that what it’s called??).
Is anyone familiar with the middle eastern card games? Our Lebanese friends play a game called Tarneeb, it was soooooo fun. My boys are 9 and 7 and I am teaching them the above games; little one can handle them All but not holding the full deck in gin. |

My family members (parents & sibs) were all competitive bridge players (world-ranked), which was cool, but I was never able to get into it. During my childhood, my parents regularly traveled around the world to tournaments. Now that my dad has passed away, my mom no longer plays. My brothers (in their fifties) will occasionally play in a tournament.
As for me, I enjoy gin rummy, which I played with my kids when they were growing up. I also enjoy poker. |

‘May I?’
It’s a version of rummy, and you can borrow cards by asking, ‘may I?’ (Very southern and polite.) 7 rounds of straights / runs. |

| We play double solitaire, triple solitaire, quadruple solitaire - up to six people. Crazy and super fun. We are all extremely competitive- scratches have been known to happen though nothing broken (yet). |

I remember Scat, Spit, crazy 8s and also King's Corner, go fish. Did play some cribbage, but I guess we weren't for the serious games.
