5' 8" and 140lbs female age 34- considered average, overweight or thin?

Body Mass Index: 25.7
Your BMI is: 25.7 (How is this calculated?)
You are in the OVERWEIGHT weight range.

The subject line says 5'8" and 140 lbs, which, according to your BMI calculator, puts her in the "normal" range.

5'8" and 140 sounds pretty fine/average to me. Anyone who says otherwise probably has an eating disorder or body image issues.

You people need to be concerned with overall health. It's about eating healthy and exercising regularly and otherwise enjoying things in moderation. And even then there are no guarantees. I had an uncle who was one of the most fit people I have ever known who died of a heart attack at 59. We were all shocked. He had been in the armed services and used to bike hundreds of miles. Not an ounce of fat to be seen on this man. Meanwhile, my great-grandmother was totally obese (the woman liked to eat butter...straight! Ick) and she lived well into her 80s.

Stop judging books by their covers. Stop obsessing about weight. You'll be happier.

That's my usual weight and I'm 5'8". I'm very fit and muscular, so I may look thinner than some people at the same weight, or bigger/bulkier than some. I'd never call it overweight, though - that's what I was always told was the "right" approximate weight for that height. (100 lbs for the first 5 feet, plus 5 lbs for every additional inch of height.)

you need to stop worrying about what others think - it's irrelevant. (Other than your husband, and I'm sure he thinks you're smokin' hot.) Worry about how you feel. If you're eating a mostly healthy diet and getting exercise a few days a week (or ideally a little movement every day), I bet you'll feel better about yourself.

No, you are fine. I am 3-4 inches shorter and weigh that and wear a size 4. It's all about muscle and body type.

are all the 140lbs sharing the inside of your skull with your brain?
how come you think by watching numbers in this anonymous forum we can answer this ridiculous question?

Beautifully said.

For PP who says she is 5'4" and fits perfectly into a size 6. Every 15 lbs equals a dress size so that puts you in a size 10. Unless, you switch size 10 labels for size 6 labels and if you do, then you are pathetic.

At 5'6" and 160, I fit into size 6 dresses and size 8 pants. Everyone's body is different and you are pathetic for accusing someone on an anonymous forum of lying.

I'm impressed, PP, you must be really fit or muscular if you fit into a size 6 with that weight and height. I am 5'5" and 130 and sometimes a 6 is too small, but I'm not muscular at all.

I'm 5'5 and 150 and wear a 6.

I'm 5'8" and 135. I get lots of compliments at this weight. If I go up to 140, the compliments stop completely! My face also gets fuller, which isn't a good look for me.

I wear a size 6. I can't imagine how someone who weighs 15 pounds more than me can wear the same size. When I go up to about 142, I fit into a size 8.

Maybe it depends on the clothing brand. I keep reading that some brands mark the sizes down one or two full sizes to make people feel better about themselves and buy more clothes!

Who knows. OP, I'm sure you look great at 140. How do you feel? Do your clothes fit well? What do others say? I have a lot of size 0 friends. I just realize that I don't have the same body type as them, and I'm not willing to stop eating to look that way. Life is too short.

Anonymous wrote:This is OP - Thanks for your opinions everyone. My whole life I have been considered thin and I'm the sort of person most women hate because I don't watch what I eat and don't exercise (except yoga once every week or two). I have a small frame (not big-boned) and am NOT curvy at all (wish I was!). Over the past 5 years, I've very gradually put on about 10 lbs. Prior to that I hadn't gained weight since my teen years - even after two kids I lost all my baby weight right away. I have been feeling insecure and fishing for compliments lately. I work full time and have been struggling with motivating myself to fit exercise in my routine and trying to eat better. I can see how some people end up with eating disorders - it's difficult to determine how others see you.

So funny to read this because I have been feeling the same way. I am the weight I was before my DS was born 2.5 years ago (118, and I'm 5' 4"), which is slightly heavier than I was in the five years leading up to getting pregnant. I don't exercise or watch what I eat, but lately I've been feeling like my weight doesn't look the same on me as it has, that my clothes are tight, etc. I've been trying to hard to motivate myself to exercise and to eat better, but it's just not working! So good luck- I know where you're coming from! Byt 5'8" and 140 sounds thin to me. (and if you don't think so, just watch a little Biggest Loser-- I always tell myself that no matter WHAT I do to destroy my eating habits, 6 mos at "the Ranch" would surely fix me.)

5'5" and 138lbs and I wear a size 2/4. I am very athletic---as well as large boned. People always think I weighh around 115lb and I don't correct them.

I had a roommate post-college that had the same stats---height and weight---but she was a size 10/12. Our body composition and body frames were completely different. She also didn't work out--ever. I did 1.5-2 hours a day.

Wow, all this talk about compliments--must be nice. I am slim and always have been and can't remember ever getting a compliment.

i think your weight has to vacillate some to get compliments on it. Most of my friends/acquaintances have known me as a 6, 8 and 10. When I'm a 6 I get all sorts of compliments from them. If I was always the same weight I bet I wouldn't hear it.

also, I'm 5'7" and at 140 I'm always a 6 on bottom, 4 or 6 on top.
