+1. That alone might be enough to answer this question to the satisfaction of most, but I know not everyone sees it that way. |
JMU is top ranked for highway accessibility. |
After one person weighs in that VT is better, and another person weighs in that JMU is better, and it goes on and on, yes in terms of perceived prestige from FFX residents, they are equal. Departments will vary. |
That seems to be true. Long ago, Va Tech was the clear #3 in the state, but that has changed with the rise of JMU. It was kind of inevitable that the many top students who did not get into W & M and UVA and wanted to study liberal arts needed a third choice. JMU has evolved into that choice. |
Have you ever gotten off the interstate to actually visit the campus? It's beautiful. |
UVA
JMU and W&M are easily tied when you factor in everything. (W&M has the history and name recognition, JMU has the college experience, a new engineering program, and opportunities to actually interact with your professors ... unlike at VT). VT is good, but it's a factory. GMU is a great commuter school, perfect for Master's evening/weekend programs. |
W&M above UVA, as well as JMU?? I'll have a glass of what she's having please. |
You are really off your rocker if you think JMU and W&M are equivalent academic institutions. |
Calm down you two, we all need time to grab our seats before the cat fight. |
What? The median SAT score at W&M is 100 points higher than at JMU. W&M has more than just history and name recognition. (Not that we should discount name recognition: W&M is nationally known. JMU is....not.) Many people may think JMU is a more fun place to go to college, but that's not usually the metric by which adults rank colleges. JMU is a solid option for Virginia students, but let's not pretend it has the academic chops of W&M or UVA. |
I think W&M is perceived by some as being more...(for lack of a better word) intellectual (in a grind sort of way) than UVA. This seems especially true among the teens/young adults I know. I don't rank it above UVA, but it doesn't surprise me that someone might. |
NP here, but I do know that JMU historically and openly admits a wide variety of students based not only on scores. They make an effort to create a very diverse student body (race, public service, etc.) |
The JMU booster goes too far and loses all credibility. And looks ridiculous. |
Let's not confuse boredom with intellect. |
If we're putting Richmond into the mix, the correct order is: UVA W&M Richmond VA Tech JMU GMU UMW |
