Or you can stand adjacent to the line. You're still waiting the full time.

Yes, I'm sure everyone does just that.

Well, unless you polled every family that has traveled there with a person with special needs, then you don't actually know.

There is a lot of ignorance about the das use in this thread.

Well, according to Disney there was abuse of the system so they had to update it because the demand exploded. It doesn't really matter if you thought people were patiently standing next to the queue to wait out their return time. They certainly don't have to so it seems obvious that people didn't.

There are, in fact, people who do wait at the ride outside the line for their return time. Please stop with your ignorance.

Most are using DAS to “wait” for longer line rides while riding short line rides. Ie: Use DAS to wait for Mine Train and while that is going on, you can go do teacups, Mermaid, Philharmagic, etc.

Don’t pee on my face and tell me it’s raining.

You seem to have invested a lot of time and emotion, in the idea that people are getting away with something with das. You might find yourself happier and having a better vacation experience, if you focus on you and your family and how you can have the happiest day possible. And let the other people, who need a Das, worry about their families.

Clearly you're biased here. But luckily this change will cut down on the sheer number of people using DAS so that it helps the people most it was meant to help and the various programs improve waits for everyone. Why wouldn't you want that?

Here is my problem with you. While there are some cheaters, the old version of the program clearly wasn't intended to only help those with developmental disabilities because DAS was granted for many other conditions based on truthful descriptions of those conditions. Disney is changing because they decided the old system wasn't working. The changes will cut down on the number of people using the program because they are now excluding conditions that previously were eligible for DAS. The old version was meant to help those people, but the new one isn’t, as least it doesn't appear to be based on current messaging.

So, you're mad at ME because Disney will no longer include whatever your condition is? Do you think I wrote a letter to Disney asking them to look into this?

And why is it a huge problem if DAS users ride walk on rides while waiting for a return time for a more popular attraction? They aren't keeping you off of Carousel of Progress.

Hey now! Leave the Carousel of Progress out of this.

I am not disabled. I am just pointing out that people who were approved for DAS and used it exactly as allowed are not abusers.

Thanks Captain Obvious. But that doesn't mean everyone was honest and ethical. Clearly this is all about money for Disney. If 60% of the LL folks are there with DAS that's a lot of money left on the table because those people aren't using Genie +.

NP- because then they're increasing the lines at teacups or Mermaid. I waited 45 min at Mermaid last time (even though it said 15 as we went in...) You should be prevented from riding a single other ride while you have a DAS pass on your card. It should black you out as if you were actually waiting in line.

At this point, I think people with a demonstrable disability that makes waiting in the standby line too difficult should just get a free Genie+ along with one caregiver. Maybe throw in 2 pre-scheduled rides. Genie+ actually works so well that DAS isn’t really necessary as an accomodation IMO. Throw in more benches and rest areas throughout the park, maybe one “sensory room” in each land only for DAS, and everyone is take care of.

Anonymous wrote:I agree with the PP who said that DAS became necessary when they eliminated the FastPass. I have two children who benefit from waiting elsewhere (one autistic ADHD and one ADHD—we just get the DAS for the autistic family member), but we did fine with the FastPass system. Now that they’ve monetized the Lighting Lane even the DAS isn’t great because if it’s very busy that line can be quite long, too. We waited in Haunted Mansion Lighting Lane line in Disneyland for nearly an hour after waiting outside the line for an hour plus. Several times we almost bailed as our kids kept bumping into the people around us because the line was so congested. One could also argue that we are “taking advantage” of the DAS since we didn’t use it before, but honestly we didn’t need it with the old system. FastPass is never coming back though, since they’ve figured out how to charge people to wait in shorter lines. I don’t understand how people will leave the line either. There have been times when we wanted to leave the line and couldn’t.

ALSO I would add that I think standby lines became much more untenable when they started selling Genie+. For example we used to have no issue waiting in standby for rides like Buzz Lightyear because while there was a line, it moved along fairly quickly. Now people flood the Lighting Lane (I’m guessing because there’s nothing left more attractive) on even these rides. I counted the last time we went and they were letting like 20+ people in from the Lightning Lane for every 4-6 people in standby! That’s ridiculous.

Why is that ridiculous? To me, if I pay for the LL and I have a time to ride and wait for my turn, I want to go in before anyone in the stand-by line.

My point is that they are IMO overselling Genie+, and making the experience suck for other people who also paid hundreds or thousands of dollars to be there (or just don’t have a LL for that particular ride).

I’d like to see stats on how many people in lightning lanes are DAS vs genie +. I don’t think genie is the reason for the overcrowding.

Maybe to fix DAS, they should make it so you can’t enter any other rides while you’re in “line” for your ride.

According to this source 60% of the scans were from DAS and not Genie +. Demand for DAS exploded once the pay per use Genie + was introduced. I read somewhere else that with DAS you will have to wait 10 mins after scanning to book another return. With Genie + you can book another right away, if you can find one.

https://insidethemagic.net/2024/04/disney-ends-inclusivity-das-ad1/

Wow. 60%?

DP here. Yep, DAS use tripled once free FP went away and G+ came out. Gee, I wonder why. Hopefully severely limiting DAS will help the waits and availability of G+. It’s salt in the wound to have pay outrageous prices for Genie and still have to wait a long time. I’m so glad they cut DAD groups from 6 to 4 too and I wish they would cut it even further. It’s the extended families clogging up the lines, not the actual DAS users.

Honestly, I'm not sure you can cut it further down below four. I think it makes more sense to limit DAS users and their groups to using DAS to ride major attractions no more than one time per day. Even though my family has used DAS, it does seem unfair to allow unlimited rides on the attractions with the longest waits when people who pay for Genie + don't even get a chance to ride once.

They could also do tiering like they used to for FP and limit people to a certain number of tier 1 rides on DAS per day.

With Genie+ you usually can't ride all of the top rides in a park, as the most popular rides sell out before you get to pick again, so a cap would make it more equal. DAS should be giving an equal experience, not be equivalent to a VIP pass.

Again, VIP tours require people to wait in the LL line, and certain rides are limited to one per day also.
Anonymous
LOL at the DAS users trying to pretend they are not lengthening the wait for others when they redeem their pass.

It's very much like a VIP pass to be able to put yourself on a waitlist for a ride and then get to do other fun things while you wait, like go to a show, shop, watch a parade or go eat lunch. You can get on the standby list for Tower of Terror and then go see the Beauty and the Beast show while you wait. Or tap in for Micky and Minnie RR and go see the Indiana Jones stunt show or watch the parade. Then get on the list for Rise of the Resistance while you do Star Wars land. It's a huge advantage.

NP - I have been to Disney World a lot, and frankly your response above is exactly why the experience has degraded. Your happy day tactics, do in fact impact my ability to have a happy day. Anyone who has been to the parks at all has lived through huge families rolling grandma up in her wheelchair (or worse her scooter), so that everyone can board, or groups of teenagers with one of them in a wheelchair with a "boot" and then you see a different person from the same group with the "boot" later, or yes, even kids on the spectrum and their families. As many have mentioned above, no one's kids wants to wait in lines, and if yours is experiencing distress, it is because you have chosen an inappropriate vacation.

Dying kids in a wheelchair getting their "Make a Wish" trip - yes, come on down to the front of the line. Anybody else should understand what is involved in a trip to Disney and either adjust or choose a different trip.

Was your last trip more than ten years ago? Because Disney no longer grants DAS for the scenarios you describe.

To see the DAS abuse, you just need to go on social media and disney blogs- they tell you exactly what buzzwords to say to get the DAS. Some of the biggest abusers of DAS are actually cast members and the college program- you tell the screener you have anxiety caused by crowds or are sensitive to the sun/heat and you can get a DAS.

Look at this post from Len Testa. GAC (predecessor to DAS) users were around 3% of all guests but used 30% of the capacity at Toy Story Mania. Disney said that DAS use has tripled since the GAC. You can trace additional posts from Len Testa on that forum where he breaks down where Touring Plans estimates around 60-75% of all LL capacity is DAS users and family.

NP. It's not just about you. It's about the other people in your party who are also enjoying DAS privileges. The non disabled siblings or the other parent are riding double.
