My DS is physically similar- so tough for middle schoolers!
I agree with the “why are you obsessed with me?” line, or similar. If that doesn’t work- does the bully have an obvious weakness? If so, throw it right back. “Whatever, fat*ss” with an eyeroll. That sort of thing. |
That’s cool — my son has the opposite issue and tends toward the pudgy, so the mean comments he gets at school are what you’re suggesting as a comeback. Maybe we can all suggest that our kids use comebacks that don’t focus on the other person’s appearance. |
One additional thing to watch out for is someone recording the exchange and then posting it to social media. This is less likely to happen in class (but honestly who knows) but it's fair game if it happens on the bus. Short and/or nonverbal responses may be best, as some PPs have already suggested. |
This right here. |
Bullies will look for a reaction...they want the target to get all upset.
A comeback will feel better while you are planning it, but will likely escalate things. But an unconcerned shrug and walk away will stop the bullying much faster. |
This. Also, “yo momma wears combat boots” |
Just call the kid an epithet for gay. That will stop it. |
Some of these suggestions. I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
Please don't teach your child to retaliate with weight comments or homophobic slurs. |
"thanks for sharing" - walk away |
This sounds like something from your imagination or a movie. In real life, when the skinny, scrawny kid throws a punch, his ass gets beaten (either then or later) or a teacher sees it and he gets in trouble for fighting (and then, later, his ass gets beaten). |
I know, right? Altough to be honest the one about yo mama did make me laugh. |
Ignore. And push-ups. |
WTF |
The yo mamma jokes can be funny and bring levity to the situation. The gay comments won't. It will escalate things. The best way to deal with bullies (not physical) is to deadpan response and walk away or with humor. |
Usually I would agree but the “why are you so obsessed with me?” was practiced at home and used by kid in middle school. Any variation works too. “You seem to like staring at my body” and many others DCUM wouldn’t approve of. Think of being a middle school boy. If you are offended, it’s likely a good comeback. |
