SOL In high school

DD said she can go late to her Algebra 2 class (ON SOL DATE) because she is not required to take her SOL because she passed all required SOL she needed to pass. She is also not taking the Geosystems SOL for the same reason... Is this even true? Before I emailed the teacher and the consolers I wan to make sure, that students that enough SOL credit's no longer taking SOL?
It wasn't this way when my oldest graduated from high school in 2017.

Call the guidance office. I'd send her to school. Why "allow" an absence?

Your DD is correct that FCPS no longer has students sit for an SOL if they already have the required verified credit(s) in that subject area. So if your DD passed the Algebra I or Geometry SOL in the past, she won’t sit for Algebra II. That is a change since your older child (who also needed 2 verified credits in math so had to sit for an additional test…students who started HS in 2018 or beyond only need 1).

But that isn’t an excuse for a day off. Students not sitting for an SOL are expected to attend class. My kid just took the reading SOL yesterday morning and I absolutely had her stay for the rest of the day.

My kid had pass A1 in 8th grade They emailed their counselor about it was told they still had to sit for Geometry even they did not need the credit.

our school did 3 hour sol blocks. On the day my kids didn't have sol, they were to sit in a room and work on non- online homework or read. My kids stay home.

You can opt them out. Why send them to take a test that they don't need, doesn't impact their grade, and isn't used for college admissions?

My kid has a lot of dentist appointments on those days.

That why she wanted to attend school late that day.

This. The insistence that they sit for the SOL in 9th grade is due to Federal participation requirements so if your child already has the verified credit from 8th grade only the school is benefitting here. That’s why they push it so hard (that and the fact that technically, VA does not have an opt out procedure for SOLs; if you choose not to have your child take them it’s considered a “refusal”).

Districts say that a math SOL needs to be taken in high school even if the student already has a verified math credit. Can districts impose their own graduation requirement on top of whatever is legally required? For instance, if a student doesn't take the math SOL in high school that is called for by ESSA, can districts deny a diploma?

My kid took Alg 1 and Geometry SOLs in MS. They made her sit for Alg 2 but she didn't have to pass it. I did not know I could refuse so she took it.

Is Geosystems a science? If so and she already passed a science SOL she does not have to sit for another one. Mine passed the Biology SOL last year so is done with all future science SOLs.

Where does it say that a student can refuse to take a high school math SOL if they have a verified math credit?

We asked the testing coordinator at DCs school. According to them, it’s a federal participation requirement unrelated to graduation. There is no benefit to the student but they don’t tell you that because they want as many students as possible to test.
