May is AAPI Heritage Month. CAPA-MC has hosted various events for celebrating our diversity and inclusion, to combat AAPI Hate. One of them is this Friday, 5/21. She volunteers in various organizations and likes to build new friendship in her diverse neighborhood. 2. Janet Sanchez, a parent of 3 kids age 14, 16 and 19. Migrated from the Philippines in 1988 after graduating college. Currently, manages a clinical practice while volunteering and advocating for better mental health and public education policies. 3. Michelle Senk, parent of four children. Three girls ages 24, 22 and17 and a 12-year-old son. Also have four dogs. Came to Clarksburg 7 years ago from the Philadelphia area. Worked in IT prior to kids, took a ten-year break teaching SAT/ACT prep, started her own company Premier Prep, then leaped back to the corporate IT world. Involved in PTA in Pennsylvania and Maryland among other volunteer pursuits. Her mother is a daughter of Italian immigrants. Her father’s lineage goes back to the French first setting foot in Canada or sometime shortly thereafter. Her husband is of second-generation Polish heritage. 4. Mini Varughese, parent of elementary and high schooler. She is a scientist at NIH. Her family moved to the US from India when she was very young. She is a member of the MCCPTA and moderator of the MCCPTA COVID-19 Response Facebook group and an Admin for one of the local Buy Nothing Facebook groups. Questions: • What does your “race” mean to you? • What was your Asian/Non-Asian experience growing up/living in the USA? Do you feel your children will have the same experience you had? Why and Why not? • Do you identify as Asian, Indian, or what? What does Asian mean to you? • With the latest AAPI hate incidents, what do you see America in terms of race issues in next 5, 10 years or more?

Open House on Zoom to learn about USCG Auxiliary official national youth program, Sea Scouts. DC-based Sea Scout Ship 25 is part of a national maritime Scouting program that started in 1912. It is an inclusive program for all young adult women and men age 14 but not yet 21 (or 13 and completed the 8th grade). It’s operated through Sea Scout “Ships”, groups of young adults who are guided by adult advisors. We wear sharp uniforms, meet twice a month on Saturdays (usually in the mornings) at the DC Harbor Patrol Headquarters and have a lot of outdoor activities on and off the water, including social gatherings.

By learning about seasonality, the labor of planting seeds, and how gardens were depicted in the Federal period, Girl Scouts and children from the general public will appreciate where their food comes from and recognize the importance of gardens in the past and the present. Registration includes a tour of the house, a garden activity booklet, and a real planting to take home!
