I would NEVER let my AP have her rando boyfriend sleep over 3 nights a week with my kids there! And I would NEVER entertain the idea of her getting her own underinsured jalopy car. I would be so worried about being dragged into a lawsuit when she crashes it and has totally inadequate insurance, because what if she's doing something connected to her employment by you (such as, driving home to work)? I feel like you've been more than generous and she's walking all over you.

HAHAHA no.

Personal transportation outside basics (i.e. errands) is her responsibility. If she wants to buy a car and pay for insurance, that's her choice and right as an adult. Tell her fine, but she has to pay for the car, gas, insurance and repairs and explain to her how much it will cost. She is an adult. Stop treating her like your child.
i know she is not a child, but she is my employee who also lives with me, so I am also her landlord. As a landlord and employer, I do not want to permit her to have a car.

Right, but what you are saying is pretty crazy. No landlord or employee can control their tenant's freedom of movement (or body). Seek help.

What? She can take her “body” moving in an Uber, her boyfriend’s car or on her own two feet. Street parking is not permitted on OP’s street. She is under no obligation to let the au pair park in OP’s private garage or driveway. You can’t leave cars long term at the nearby train station every day and treat it as your personal parking space without being repeatedly ticketed.

No car or rematch. Sounds like you’ve already made your mind up, OP. Good for you.

My precious au pair almost did this. I wonder tho even if she pays for insurance do you trust that she is continuing to pay? If not, won’t the cost of an accident go to your insurance since the car would be registere at your house? Is there any possibility that it would go to your insurance even if she pays for insurance, because maybe you have better coverage?
