Not to be rude, but it is NOT 'free rent' when the nanny is working. Just a pet peeve that I can't stand...

Sure it is. It's a benefit, like any other, and is considered in the compensation package offered to a nanny.

IRS does not consider it a benefit If living in is a requirement of the job. Who are you to question IRS?

No, most of the time money is deducted from overall pay rate to "cover" the cost of room and board. If someone is paying full rate like they would for a live-out nanny (not reducing pay), then it would be free rent. But most people that would tell you they are paying full rate, are already paying on the low end of the scale.

If the job requires that you live on, YOU CANNOT DEDUCT RENT!!!!! How many times does this have to be said? Try taking out rent and you can be sued.

A live in nanny is a perk for you and most nannies would not accept less on salary but want more.

Obviously a high turnover. Youre paying basically for not being a parent. You have people for that. Then you try being a live in Nanny. Shallow. Its against practiced ethic to charge for room and board at market value.

Not typical but we had a live out nanny who asked to live in to save her rent money. She was a part timer. We left her pay the same. It worked out great. Another live out nanny asked if her sister could live with us while the sister was in school. The sister worked around 5 hours a week and refused pay. That was also a good deal for everyone.

Then you must have had shitty bosses. Don't live in if it's not a good fit...problem solved. I love my live-in job and have happily been here for almost three years now.

The unfortunate part is you don't find out until you "live in" lol

Aren't you discriminating against Spanish speakers right now? Oh.. no. No. NO!!! Lolz.

I'm not offering a job, so no.

I am 100% Mexican & NO I am not, as well as the person who commented before me, when you pat a HEFTY monthly mortgage, get & pay for everything for them as they are FINALLY trying to not be trapped at 26 yrs old because her parents used her as a slave, so me giving her this life, her freedom, when her man calls & has a day off, then she can take the day off & spend time with him, I do not monitor who her friends are, boyfriend, life out of the home is NONE of my business but when it comes to my kids, she has to be on point, time, & know hoe to take care of them, feed them, & I refuse a diaper rash on my 16 month at all, I let her go out & as I said we pay for everything, the gas, insurance, her car she drives (which is nice), her bedroom with a her own bathroom, computer, bed's 1 for her & 1 for her dog, all top line products to clean with & I as well help & am not some lazy person who just watches...... I love my boys, so she is not the only to change them, take care of them etc etc.... if I am home & up, then I watch & play with my babies, I cook every meal they eat even she wakes to a note of how to warm it up? I have gotten her a U-haul, paid for her to get her license, paid for lots of food because she ONLY eats chicken, all her mom taught her out of a can at worst!! She finally tried shrimp fettuccine Alfredo, all fresh from the garden & she LOVED it!!! I drive my 5 yr to school every single day, she watches the baby as he is still sleeping, she has a baby monitor were she can see if my child is ok, with visual & sound?? Her boyfriend can come over & visits when ever he wants or even call for that matter, she has the freedom of doing her own laundry, she has a HUGE bathroom, a fridge, a computer, desk, 2 beds like I said & all the things we buy her daily to feel like family?? Am I doing enough?? She says she has never felt so loved, I pay for dog food for her dog, treats, land to rome, 2 beautiful acres with lots to do, so am I am I taking advantage of her as I BUST my butt too as well as when I am home or up, I take care & change my sons diapers, she has to basically do NOTHING for my5 yr old as he is a mamma's boy & just wants me.

Anything that you provide out of the goodness of your heart (anything beyond room and rent) is on you, it's not required. Either way, you are required to pay minimum wage. If you choose not to do so, she can later come back and sue you for back wages.

Oh, and the IRS would loooove to talk to you later about the taxes on the wages that you didn't pay too...

I could NEVER do that but if anything help as much as possible.....
