If even one au pair is treated so shamefully, this program must be discontinued.

The arrangement is full of abuse, not to mention how often the au pairs are taking on additional employment.

Yes, but there are many levels of steps taken to prevent abuse, and obviously there could be more. Saying a program that generally works well for both sides should be abolished because it has been difficult for a minority doesn’t make sense. I’m absolutely for more checks and balances and regulations but I don’t think it needs to fundamentally change.

When I was au pair ages ago I felt I was cheap labor. I think many families use au pairs first because it’s flexible childcare and while I know many families do understand the cultural exchange aspect my family didn’t care about where I came from, what culture and such.

I don't know what it's for sure, all I know that these girls are taking employment from qualify nannies who are seeking meaningful employment. I lose a well paying job to one. I was told by my employers that they couldn't afford me. However, I am beginning to believe it was more my age than anything else. When I was told of my employment coming to an end I started calling and asking around to find another job. I've gone on may interviews and no one would hire me. They have given me all kind of excuses to why they don't find me employable but none could say to my face, it's my age...because of lawsuits I was told....I wish one was bold enough to tell me the truth as my friends have. Not sure why only Americans get the best out of this program when virtually every developed country has this program and Americans sometimes ARE the Au pairs. I’ve met American Au pairs overseas; it’s a great program. Obama’s mom was an Au pair. BTW, the US pays its Au pairs the most.

Imo it's mostly exploitation of young naive women (usually) who typically can't afford to travel on their own.

I can see what I see. These girls are afraid to report their abusers because they don't want to experience the shame of getting "sent home" as a failure.

There simply isn't much incentive for the agencies to do the required work to search for a successful re-match. The 14-day limit isn't enough time. It's more profitable to send home the victimized (whistleblower) au pair, and get the abusive family a brand new au pair.

And yes, sometimes these girls are getting sexually assaulted by the man in the house when his wife isn't home.

You CHOSE to have child(ren) and caring for them is YOUR problem. Under no circumstances should a young woman (or man) from a foreign country be a live-in for minimum wage and I do not care that you have you pay the agency. It is still cheap childcare/maid service for you or you wouldn't be using this program.

Overhaul program with US labor laws applicable or do away with it altogether.
