I have to agree that this is a major reason I generally wouldn't feel comfortable hiring a young nanny to watch my child. The reactions of disbelief in this post at the idea of not being attached to your phone all day are case in point. I think it's a huge generational divide, and it's going to be rare to find a younger nanny who could "handle" not using their phone 24/7.

p.s. it's worth mentioning that there are a ton of professions where people have extremely limited access to their phones: teachers, surgeons; people who work in the intelligence community, etc. If my daughter's future teacher won't be checking his/her phone all day, why should my nanny?

No, OP clarified that she meant when the baby was awake and/or out of the crib.

NP here and a request to NOT make personal calls/texts while working is not unusual or asking too much. I truly don't understand why nannies seem to feel that it is. If the call/text is job related than fine -- but updating your Facebook page or being on DCUM is not "job related".

You would think common sense would be to use the phone for emergency when you are on the job... not to update your friends on what the kids are doing or what you are doing every second of the day. Of course I do and so does my nanny -- just not on the telephone. Actual people are involved in real life.

OP, how do you plan to monitor your nanny's phone use if she were to agree to your request? Remember, you stated no phone use of any kind other than communicating with you. Do you plan to follow her around? Do you use your cell phone during work hours for personal conversations (including scheduling Drs appointments, etc.)? Don't say it isn't relevant; it is.

I cannot imagine someone in my house, taking care of my child a,d denying her my food.
