McDonald’s or nanny to a kid??

One of my clients told me that she went thorough 4 nannies the first year. She just wasn't offering enough. She had no idea she had to give them any benefits. They are in Bethesda.

She now has a weekday nanny (40 hours only) and a weekend nanny (12 hours).

I’d start at a salary you are comfortable with and go from there. We started at $18 an hour off the books and were having trouble finding anyone we were comfortable with so increased salary and added benefits and paying on the books. We found someone for $22 an hour that we really liked. We noticed above $20, quality of candidates really increased.

There are some really good nannies that do all of the above, but those are rare and are worth the money. Those are the nannies that parents with high pressure jobs feel comfortable leaving their children for days at a time while on work trips. The nannies that I tend to see are the ones at the park ignoring the kids. $25 for that type of care is unreasonable.

Amazon and most fast food restaurants pay 15 an hour with taxes taken out and far tougher working conditions. It’s insulting and tone deaf to say that a 25/hour salaried nanny position is slavery.

We live in Kensington and have had three nannies over the past 10 years for our twins. We started each nanny between $16 and $18 an hour. Two of them we found through neighborhood referrals, and the third, our current nanny/housekeeper, we found on care.com.

It’s a 50 hour week position, 10 paid holidays, two weeks vacation starting, five sick days.

We give a one dollar an hour raise annually, and add other benefits over the years including additional vacation time, partial or full coverage of health insurance, and bonuses once or twice a year. Our current nanny has been with us for five years, and I think we are hitting the ceiling on hourly compensation, But we have added substantial other benefits so she now gets almost a month of vacation, full health insurance, and if we put a ceiling on the hourly rate we will increase her bonus amount and maybe even reduce her hours.

We pay $30 hourly plus $350 Health Insurance stipend , 2 weeks vacation and all US Holidays. We’re in Bethesda and the going rate is $25-$35 before taxes.
