A nanny is not a professional. Nannies have time to eat. The issue is should the nanny bring lunch or does the employer provide. Professional jobs normally don't provide lunch.

And hourly jobs give a lunch period off. Nannies don’t get that. We’re treated like salaried professionals in some ways and hourly menial workers in others.

I’m a professional. I’m writing and implementing a curriculum with my charges, tweaking it as needed. The hours I put in far exceed the hours with the children.

I’d rather have health insurance provided than lunch.

Yeah, because those two things cost the same.

Why settle for less than you are worth?

It’s not about settling, PP. You made a ridiculous comparison. Personally I have both free lunch and full healthcare. But it was never an either or situation in my mind!

Give the nanny her break and provide a lunch.

I bring my own lunch to work and I do not get an assigned lunch break , I just eat while I do work . Nannies act like it’s polite for employers to provide food for them but the last nanny I had (we told her she can help herself) would drink an entire jar of coffee creamer by herself in less than a week as well as eat all of our fruit, cheese and bread and sometimes even the kids snacks. It was getting ridiculous! After that I told our current nanny to bring her own lunch daily . She chose not to and then I felt bad because she just wasn’t eating at all then . So now I’m back to providing food for the nanny and I agree with the previous mom , it’s an additional thing for me to worry about weekly. I like her though and I pay her very well for her help. I agree with the other moms who said it’s just professional behavior to bring your own lunch daily and not “expect to be fed.”

I am also really surprised that people are saying that employers should provide their nanny with lunch. Snacks and coffee, sure. But I work at a desk job and bring my own lunch (I don’t take a lunch hour break). Why would a nanny not pack their lunch?

You presumably are able to leave your office to grab a lunch. A nanny can’t leave. This has been explained countless times on this thread.

It’s getting boring now.

No, DP. You haven’t explained the relationship between “employee can’t go to Panera” means that the employer must provide lunch.” Nanny can pack her lunch. Or Uber Eats.

All asked and answered. Now it’s just tiresome.

Most professionals don't have time for a lunch break. If a parent is home then they can watch the kids for 30 minutes. Usually breaks are unpaid.

I''ll ask as others have done: who babysits the kid(s) while the nanny takes her 1 hour lunch break, either in the house undisturbed or out at Panera? I see a lot of nannies here are expected to work 9-10 hours per day. So when is her well-earned break?
