I will "begrudge you" for it, PP. I wouldn't hire you if you didn't give your consent to be on camera. You have no expectation of privacy in your place of employment.

VISIBLE Cameras are necessary. They will vindicate good nannies and PREVENT horror stories. The word 'prevent' was deleted in my previous post.

We have cameras on 24/7 since our son was born 5 years ago. We've had nannies for the past 3.5 years. Nanny cams are somewhat dishonest. Visible cameras are necessary.



Early on we'd check the cameras often when we had a new babysitter or nanny. Now its when there are 'issues' that occurred. The cameras are very visible and have been discussed. Our nanny/babysitters have been excellent and loyal. The cameras helped BUILD TRUST. We saw we had loving nannies that sincerely cared for our son. Do they slack off, look at their phone too much, etc? Yes, but that's not an issue. They are only human, and we know they'll care for our child, call us if they're sick, show patience that we could only hope for. Those are the most important issues. We'd never embarrass them by directly critiquing something that was seen. Our nannies have lied to us about insignificant things....."Johnny went to bed at 8:30' when they actually went to bed much later. Without the cameras the trust would not have been quite as high.


We did have 1 babysitter that was terrible. Without the cameras we could have put our son in danger.

So, when I read about a nanny not wanting to work for someone with cameras I wonder....No parent is going to waste their life watching hours and hours of footage. When Johnny falls down and gets a bad bruise by no fault of the nanny, the CAMERA vindicates them and helps the parents realize things happen. None of us is perfect and 99% of parents aren't looking for anyone that is perfect. If someone is unreasonable with a camera, they will be unreasonable without out one too.


In 2018 cameras are necessary. Our cameras have caught nosey neighbors peaking in when we weren't home, a vandal, and a mid-day thief entering our home and stealing property before my husband caught him (and he ran). We lived in a fairly affluent neighborhood when all 3 episodes occurred. The cameras helped me sleep at night. We caught the vandal, have a picture in the paper of the thief, and know who not to trust in that neighborhood previous neighborhood. We live in a world full of cameras....deal with it.

In my opinion, the truth is a bit of everything, going case by case.

For example, I had them at one job, at a daycare. I was extremely busy being in a room with multiple children all by myself and thus had no time to be on my phone. The only reason I hated the cameras was because one of my bosses would sit in her office and just watch the live feed constantly and then come out to criticize whatever we were doing, which was pretty ballsy of her considering she nor my other boss would hire anyone else to help me out.

The parents were also meant to be able to view the cameras, though I have no idea if they ever could (that place was so shady), and I had no problem with that. In fact, I WISHED the parents would say something about me busting my ass every day with no help, which is a huge DCFS violation.

Now that I’m a nanny for one child, there are no cameras. I have to say that I’m glad there aren’t, because if there were, I would have to put on this big show all hours of the day, and I wouldn’t be able to let him have time to play alone while I surf my phone for a few minutes to have an unscheduled break.

I understand why parents would want cameras and I would never begrudge them for it, though. If I were a parent, I’d want to be able to check on my child throughout the day. It’s gotta be the hardest thing in the world to trust another person with your kid. My nanny family and I are both lucky in that they trust me enough and I, in turn, don’t have to worry about cameras.

Cameras are just something we (as nannies) have to be prepared for. It’s a little uncomfortable, but if you keep yourself and the child busy (which I admit is hard as a nanny compared to working at a daycare with more kids), the day will fly and the parents will be pleased.

You gotta do what you gotta do. Every jobs has its perks and downsides.

So do not accept phone calls from anyone when the child is awake and stop talking about your period at work. I am a nurse and we are always on camera at my hospital. You really can keep your phone in your purse until lunch/child's nap and the parents can reach you at home with a landline.

A big negative to exposing your Nanny to cameras is the (very real!) possibility that a hacker can view and also listen in to what the Nanny says.
If this sounds like rubbish, then go online and read how this has happened to people who are being filmed.
Cameras can put a Nanny at a risk and that is a real threat to her safety + well-being.

That should never be compromised at all.

No, I do not know or believe that job performance is negatively impacted with cameras present. I am a nanny and have always worked in high income/high profile homes with cameras - I never think about them. I also leave my phone in the diaper bag and check it at nap time only.
