Look, pot isn't evil. However, leaving it lying around is really idiotic. If my bosses did that, I would mention it. I am a safety hawk. Boil the entire argument here down to pure safety issues.
As far as intoxicants and parents go, alcohol and pain killers are much more addictive and debilitating as far as functionality. Most people have those substances in their homes.
The judgement on both sides of this thread is really moralistic. Anyone yelling about a joint better be very certain that they are always going the perfect speed limit, etc- don't break a single law.
I live in a legal state. The tide is turning. Those of us who wish for non debilitating relief from chronic pain, insommia, and other issues without turning to pills with nasty side effects are grateful. This idea that all weed smokers are idiotic stoners really isn't true. The daycare example posted earlier is sad- but that is a very small segment of the population. Making pot legal cuts back on criminal activity and provides a medication and yes- an occasional escape- much safer than any other substance, legal or non legal. Animals in the wild have been observed to deliberately ingest plants that cause intoxication. Humans have been using forms of drinks and drugs since we started walking erect and having a sense of spirituality. I firmly believe this activity is only for mature adults that understand the ramifications, and not for growing minds or those with addictive personalities. Prescription drugs have caused much more grief and addiction than any baggie of weed.
I once found edibles and a weed infused foot rub at a home I was cleaning. Turns out it was being used for pain relief for the mom's dying father. You never know what folks are dealing with. I would implore these parents, OP, to put it in a safe place. Accidental ingestion by children is an ER visit.
And a CPS report.

Ok so if your not smoking to feel some kind of a high then what are you doing it for?
Pain relief, appetite stimulation, sleep aid, relaxation --- there are plenty of reasons someone would smoke a strain that doesn't give you a typical "high."
A typical high, but it does still give you some form of a high.
And no matter what kind of high you are getting I think you still would agree that it's not appropriate to leave your weed out where a kid could get it. Right?
D.A.R.E. did a real number on you. May you always be kept safe from the terrors of the demon weed.
Stay on topic and answer the question. Yes or No. Is it a good idea for parents to leave their weed lying around for their children to get into?
Simple question.
OP didn't say it was lying around, she said she found it searching for a power cord, and that another time the father had it out when she got there. It's not exactly packed in the diaper bag. But there's no convincing all you Lovejoys that your false distinction between cannabis and alcohol is just a myth you've bought into. You guys strangle yourself on pearls all you want; quit your nanny jobs; do whatever you need to to flee from a legal, nonaddictive substance. Prayers up.
The nanny being able to find it in searching for a power cord means it was not in a safe place.
Non-addictive does not mean healthy. Legal for adults is not legal for kids.
Adults can do what they want in their free time, but kids should not be ingesting drugs or have access to them.
I'm certain you kid's pcp would agree. Feel free to ask them the next time you bring them in if you can put your weed down long enough to do that, but that's probably why you have a nanny so your kid doesn't interfere with you being stoned.
Don't bother praying for me, but you do need to pray for your brain cells.

You can't even admit that it's not appropriate for parents to leave their drugs out for their children to get into. But you don't have a problem. Weed has killed your brain cells.
