What about when the kids are sleeping? Or your friends could do it for free.

Even if kids sleep through the night you need to pay a set rate. I saw this as a mom as well as a daughter whose own mom needs care. Both my mom and kids sleep through night but I pay any overnight caregiver 100 per night plus hourly rate during waking hours. It's expensive so that is why my DH and I seldom do overnights . But if you want nanny to care for kids and be responsible you need to pay them.
