Her mother didn't find out until she brought her to the doctor and found out she was pregnant. My friend works with kids now, in a public school, as a teacher. She's wonderful. Every year, countless women (and girls) have abortions for a variety of reasons. You are free to think that what they're doing is wrong - just as I am free to think you are a judgmental jackass who likes to kick others when they're down and thinks it's okay to snoop through other people's personal belongings. You don't know the OP's life and situation any better than the MB or DB (actually, it's almost 100% certain that you know less). I hope you're not a Christian, because from what I've read, God does not look kindly on those who go around doing the judging for him.

OP, I think the way these people treated you doesn't deserve you going back to work for them. If they'll give you a reference, great...but the way they treated you doesn't seem to imply that.

I'm looking for a nanny (for a share) in the spring...I'd be happy to have someone with excellent experience and concern for saying goodbye to the children they are taking care of.

The OP has rights over her body just as we all do - it's none of our business what she chooses to do. I hope anyone I have working for me would feel comfortable telling me they needed time off to recover from a procedure, end of story.

I'm not lying, but thanks for making assumptions and passing judgment. If you must know, I didn't meet her until the following year. Her mother and stepfather divorced, she changed schools. I was new to the school too, and we became (best) friends. We still are, and we've been out of high school for over ten years. It wasn't until sophomore or junior year that she told me about what had happened. He started molesting her when she was very little and she didn't tell ANYONE because she was afraid of being homeless and hated by her mother, which is what he told her would happen. As you can imagine, it's not something she talks about often. Maybe you think I'm a liar because you don't think that children are ever molested or raped? In which case, I'm actually happy for you - it means you haven't known the pain of knowing someone you care about has been horribly hurt by someone else and knowing there is little you can do to ease that pain. But feel free to educate yourself - it happens, all over the world, every day.

HOWEVER, the point was/is, the poster I was responding to was judging the OP based on ZERO information about her personal life, without knowing if her pregnancy was due to contraceptive failure, or rape, or an accidental one-night stand, or what, nor did she know the reason for the abortion, and yet she seems to think anyone would have one doesn't belong around children. Which is sad.

He told me that the termination was affective immediately and he thought it was best if I just left before the kids woke up. At this point I was in tears so I just grabbed my stuff and left. I wasn't even able to say goodbye to the kids. At this point, I'm past being sad and I'm just angry. We did have a contract for the first year but after my review we just hadn't gotten around signing a new one. I took 3 sick days last week for the procedure and recovery. They were the first sick days I have taken with this family and I've been with them over a year.


Legally, I'm thinking you're just out of luck, though you can probably try for unemployment (worst they can say is "no"). What an awful thing to happen, though, if that is what prompted them to fire you. They shouldn't have been going through your things, and to let you go without warning, without a goodbye, is not only cruel to do to you, but a terrible thing to do to their own kids. You have my sympathy. I hope you find a better family in the future.

I'm not the previous poster but it's very hard to prove wrongful termination without hard proof (ie an email or recording). It's not to say that what MB/DB is legal but how would OP prove that they went through her purse and fired her because she had an abortion? "My purse was on a different hook than the one I usually use" is unfortunately not proof.

OP I'm sorry this happened to you and it's definitely not right what they did.
